Modern diesel engine has been widely used for passenger cars since its high fuel efficiency and drivability. However harmful emissions are a significant problem to use the diesel engines. Particulate matter (PM) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are the representative emissions. Thus the emission regulations focus on reduction of these two emission levels. While the PM emission can be effectively suppressed through the Diesel Particle Filter (DPF), the reduction of NOx emission is still an important issue, and are widely researched. Furthermore, the stringent emission regulation such as a real driving cycle includes a more frequent transient operation which can be a challenge to further reduction of NOx emission. Well-known and commercially widely adopted NOx reduction technology is an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR). The normal control structure about EGR system controls the Mass Air Flow (MAF) for the feedback control indicator because it is difficult to measure EGR directly. However, the MAF has a weak correlation with the NOx emission which is a performance index of EGR system. Thus, the calibrated set-point of MAF under steady state cannot guarantee the optimal performance during transient conditions. The normal diesel engine equips the Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) system to improve drivability and fuel efficiency. The VGT system is coupled with EGR system because they use the exhaust gas and heat energy on the exhaust manifold. This nonlinear Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) characteristic of the air system of diesel engine occurs the control difficulties, especially during the transient condition. This thesis investigates the learning control algorithm for diesel engine air system with optimal control strategy for the performance optimization about NOx emission during the transient condition. An iterative learning control can improve the control performance during the transient condition. In order to apply the learning control algorithm, the vehicle transient states are determined according to the demanded torque from driver and vehicle status. In this thesis, assuming the control algorithm can predict pre-defined transient state in advanced. The learning control algorithm obtains the feedforward values about EGR and VGT actuators using the previous control results. The control algorithm can compensate the time delay of VGT and reduce the error of feedback controller during the transient condition. The Intake Oxygen Concentration (IOC) is used to optimize the control strategy during transient because it directly affects the combustion and emissions. Since the IOC is determined based on the mass conservation law in the intake manifold, estimating the mass flow rate of EGR is a most critical issue for the IOC based control strategy. However, to estimate the EGR mass flow rate the conventional orifice valve model causes extrapolation error or inaccurate estimation results. In order to improve the estimation performance, a correction algorithm for estimating IOC is proposed. A dynamic correction state is determined to compensate the inaccuracy of the orifice valve model. In addition, the intake pressure dynamics is also derived based on the energy conservation law in the intake manifold. Using these dynamic models, a nonlinear parameter varying model is determined, and an extended Kalman filter is designed to derive the value of correction state. An optimization algorithm in a function of the IOC is proposed to optimize the engine performance with regards to NOx emission and drivability. Using these models, the cost function for the performance optimization is designed and the optimal value of the IOC is determined. Then, the MAF set-point is adjusted to trace the optimal IOC under engine acceleration conditions. The proposed algorithm is validated through scheduled engine speeds and loads to simulate the extra-urban driving cycle of the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). As validation results, the MAF is controlled to trace the optimal IOC from the optimization method. Consequently, the NOx emission is substantially reduced during acceleration operating conditions without the degradation of drivability.
