Image resampling is employed for image reconstruction, improving the appearance of image displays for viewers, zooming, reducing artifacts, and so on. Since there are many different digital media formats, various applications require resampling approaches for resizing images. Thus, It is necessary to study how to estimate accurate values for missing pixels in the large image using information from pixels in the small image. Recently, FPD (Flat Panel Display) such as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), and PDP (Plasma Display Panel) have become more common than CRT (Cathode-Ray Tube) in the large display market. The FPD has high panel resolution and interlaced signals cannot be displayed on FPD[1]. Thus, FPD requires more adaptive image signal processing for displaying high resolution and progressive signals. Many conventional image upscaling algorithms yield often blurred results, but more complicated methods are time consuming. Most of the resampling methods proposed in the literature could be classified into two categories: Conventional method and adaptive methods. In the conventional methods, a resampling function is applied indiscriminately to the whole image. However, the resulting image generally suffers from aliasing, edge blurring, and other artifacts. Adaptive methods are designed to avoid these problems by analyzing the local structure of the source image and using different interpolation functions with different areas of support. Our proposed method is classified within the adaptive method. Both approaches are typically used for the nearest neighbor method and bilinear interpolation(BI). These methods have less computational complexity. However, the nearest neighbor method produces blocky edges, and the bilinear interpolation method yields blurred images. These techniques apply the same interpolation procedure to the whole image. In the proposed approach, we classify the region is classified to be filled in four directions. The computationally intensive and edge preserving technique is only performed in the -60o and 60o regions, whereas more straight-forward methods are used in the remaining (0o and 90o) regions. The decision on which a suitable resampling technique is suitable made by analyzing the direction of the region to be filled. In this thesis, an adaptive resampling algorithm for transforming is proposed from 176×72 to 352×288 images. The algorithm is based on segmenting the image dynamically into four kinds of regions, and interpolates missing regions adaptively. Algorithm performance has been compared with those of different methods previously reported in the literature.
