Naoshima (直島) in Kagawa Prefecture is an island in the Seto Inland Sea that is known for its modern art museums, architectures and sculptures. And it is often called ‘Art Sanctuary’ or ‘Paradise for Contemporary Art’. The purpose of this essay is to reveal the meaning of Naoshima as art sanctuary from the perspective of ‘changing pilgrimage’ in contemporary Japan, giving special attention to ‘spirituality of museum’ or ‘spirituality of light, time, and space’. Nowadays when the boundary between the religious pilgrimage and the secular tourism has increasingly become ambiguous, the art tourism into Naoshima shows a new type of pilgrimage. This essay makes an attempt to elucidate such possibility of a new pilgrimage by interpreting the artifacts and the museums in Naoshima such as Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum, and Benesse House, referring to the notion ‘spirituality’ that differs from ‘religion’. In so doing, I will argue that the modern tourist is a kind of the secular pilgrim and the tourism is different kind of pilgrimage of modern man, and that the museum is a modern site of cultural pilgrimage as well as a spiritual center. In conclusion, this essay will send a message that we can get some wisdom to live together with every kind of contradictions through ‘spirituality of concret, material, and a blank space’. ‘Spirituality of concrete’ might be seen from the construction technic of Ando Tadao who built Benesse House, Chichu Art Museum, and Lee Ufan Museum as well. And Claude Monet’s Water Lily works, James Turrell’s works such as Afrum, Pale Blue·Open Field·Open Sky·Backside of the Moon show us ‘spirituality of material’. Finally ‘spirituality of a blank space’ would be brought from the theme of time and space in the works such as Time Exposed by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Time/Timeless/No Time by Walter De Maria, Go Shrine and Sea of Time in Kadoya(two examples of Art House Project), Lee Ufan’s series of Relatum·From Point·From Line in particular.
