| Weight training is a sport that can bring positive changes in body composition in less time investment. The weight training is suitable to modern people who lack in physical activity due to the progress of civilization including benefits of transportation and communication. Accordingly, it is suggested that it is necessary to establish more effective weight training set method for typical male university students who are short of exercise from striving for finding employment.
Therefore, this s< tudy aims to investigate the differences in body composition (body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass), GH and IGF-1 that differ by a weight training set method(ascending set, descending set, drop set) before training, 8 weeks after training and after 2 weeks of detraining; and to suggest the appropriate training strategy for typical male university students. For the strategies to be evaluated, set method is ascending set, descending set drop set, and exercise designs are conducted by 4 sets each and three times a week for 8 weeks with moderate intensity exercise of 1RM 60% per average set, and then, the results are derived by analysing the changes in body composition, GH and IGF-1 in each set and each session, and conclusions are as follows.
First, in case of the body composition, body weight showed significant increase by each exercise group(ascending set group, drop set group) and session(pre, post, detraining)(p<.01). Ascending set group exhibited the biggest increase in weight at 8 weeks after the training but decreased back to the original body weight after 2 weeks of detraining. Drop set group demonstrated a similar pattern to ascending set group at 8 weeks after the training, but maintained the body weight of 8 weeks-post-training after 2 weeks of detraining. Skeletal muscle mass did not reveal significant change according to each exercise group(ascending set group, drop set group) and session(pre, post, detraining). However, all three groups presented with increased mass of skeletal muscles at 8 weeks after the training compared to those before the training. Descending set group showed the least change at 8 weeks after training. From the results of after 2 weeks of detraining, all three exercise groups appeared lower levels of skeletal muscle mass than those of 8 weeks after training but maintained higher levels than before the training. Comparative analysis between groups proves that drop exercise, compared to the other two groups, maintained bigger range of increase in skeletal muscle mass after 2 weeks of detraining than before the training. Body fat mass showed significant decrease in different exercise groups(ascending set group, drop set group) and sessions(pre, post, detraining)(p<.01)(p<.05), and from the comparison between groups, descending set group presented with the biggest range of decrease among all three groups at 8 weeks after training. After 2 weeks of detraining, ascending set group maintained similar level of body fat mass to 8 weeks after training, but descending set group and drop set group exhibited the pattern of returning back to the original levels of body fat mass with further increase after the training.
Second, in case of GH, it did not have significant difference according to different exercise groups(ascending set group, drop set group) and sessions(pre, post, detraining), but there were increased GH in all three groups at 8 week-post-training than prior to the training. For group comparison in regards to GH, at 8 weeks after training, drop set group exhibited similar to but rather bigger range of increase than descending set group whereas ascending set group showed smaller range of increase than the others. The levels of GH in ascending set group and descending set group groups after 2 weeks of detraining dropped from the results of 8 week-post-training and back to the original levels before the training. On the contrary, the level of GH in drop set group was maintained higher than before the training despite the decrease at 8 weeks after training.
Third, in case of IGF-1, exercise groups(ascending set group, drop set group) and sessions(pre, post, detraining) did not cause significant change in the levels of IGF-1. However, in all three groups, the levels of IGF-1 were higher at 8 weeks after training than before the training and were maintained without decrease after 2 weeks of detraining unlike the levels of GH. Comparisons between groups indicated that descending set group and drop set group showed similar range of increase at 8 week-post-training but ascending set group r<‘esulted in less increase than the other two groups. After 2 weeks of detraining, descending set group and drop set group maintained the levels from the 8 week-post-training but ascending set group with the higher level than that at 8 weeks after training.
Based on the results above, drop set is suggested as the effective training set method for typical male university students for its positive effects in body composition in comparison to ascending set showing increased skeletal muscle mass only and descending set resulting in decreased body fat. In addition, drop set group exhibited the biggest range of increase in GH concentration at 8 weeks after training among three groups and maintained the relatively higher level of GH after 2 weeks of detraining than before the training when comparing with the other two groups. Hence, based on this assessment, it is advised that drop set is more effective and appropriate training set method for typical male university students since GH response from drop set has positive influence to the improvement of body composition.; Weight training is a sport that can bring positive changes in body composition in less time investment.
