Abstract
A Study on Tracking Methodology of Untraceable Cryptocurrency: Dash and Monero Jae Heo Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering The Graduate School of Hanyang Universtiy Ever since blockchain-based Bitcoin emerged in 2009, similar cryptocurrencies have been developed and widely used. Many users who are considering decentralization as a top priority are taking an interest in cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency allows anyone to create transactions and confirm the transaction details of others. As the interest of cryptocurrency on the rise, anonymous cryptocurrencies which use obfuscation or encryption to hide transaction details are emerging. Due to anonymity, anonymous cryptocurrencies are used in cyber crimes such as ransomware attacks, and darknet markets. As of 2015, more than 40% of the illegal transactions use the cryptocurrencies. To prevent such cyber crimes, methods for tracking anonymous cryptocurrencies are needed. In this thesis, we analyze two anonymous cryptocurrencies, Dash which uses obfuscation to hide transaction flows and Monero which uses ring signature and encryption to anonymize the transactions. We also propose transaction based tracking methods for Dash and breaking ring signature methods for Monero. Through the proposed methods, we can narrow down the sender/receiver of Dash by 91.7% in average. In case of Monero, we can find the sender with 96% of probability. This thesis is aiming traceability of Dash and Monero which are commonly used anonymous cryptocurrencies and it can be used as basis for further study on anonymous cryptocurrencies.
