- Abstract
- This paper describes the topology of brushless
wound rotor synchronous machine for generator operation. A
brushless wound rotor synchronous machine (WRSM) is
designed to remove the need of slip rings and brushes which
is a problem in wound rotor synchronous machines. It’s
alternative machine a permanent magnet synchronous machine
(PMSM) suitable for many applications, however, the cost of
permanent magnet (PM) tends to increase the overall price of
such machines for commercial use. Therefore, research is
taking place in the area of wound rotor synchronous
machines. In this paper, a brushless WRSM is investigated to
be run as a generator. In this case, the machine’s field is
excited through third harmonic magnetomotive force (MMF).
The new topology described in this research is investigated
through simulation results. An 8-pole 48-slot machine is used
to validate the working of the machine.
