단장시조 혹은 홑시조의 형식 실험과 시적 전망

Abstract

근대 이후 행해져 온 형식 실험을 통해 탄생한 주요 양식으로는 ‘양장시조’, ‘단장시조(절장시조, 홑시조), 사장시조, 반시조, 연첩시조(겹시조), 혼합연형시조 등이 있다. 이 실험 양식 중에 양장시조와 단장시조의 경우를 살펴보면 그동안 수행되어온 형식실험에 대한 우리 시인들의 고민의 일단을 알 수 있다. 시조의 정형인 3장 6구 45자내외의 평시조의 형식에서 한 장 혹은 두 장을 응축하여 양장과 단장으로 만들어온 형식 실험에서 이들이 고민한 것은 주로 시조 형식 자체 내에서의 장, 자구, 행, 음절, 음보 등의 구조적인 배열과 같은 것이다. 이것은 시조 양식 논의와 관련해서 볼 때 형식, 그중에서도 순수한 형식 차원에 가까운 것이라고 할 수 있다. 순수한 형식 차원에 국한되어 시조의 실험이 수행되어 왔다는 것은 곧 형식 밖의 여러 요소들이나 조건들에 대한 논의는 간과되어 왔다는 것을 의미한다. 시조 형식 밖의 이러한 요소들과 조건들에 대한 간과는 평시조에서 변주된 양장시조 혹은 단장시조에 대한 이해를 어렵게 하여 그것의 양식으로서의 정체성 정립을 불가능하게 한다. 단장 혹은 홑시조의 정체성 정립을 위해서는 우선 그것이 평시조로부터 어떻게 독립하게 되었는지를 시조 문학의 역사적 맥락 속에서 고찰해야 하고, 단장 혹은 홑시조의 장, 구, 자수 등의 시형과 시작 규칙에 대해 이해해야 하며, 이 양식들의 기저에 어떤 이념이나 세계관이 작동하고 있는지 또 이 양식들이 어떤 사회적인 소통 구조와 향유과정 속에 놓여 있는지에 대한 이해가 전제되어야 한다. 단장시조나 양장시조로의 형식 실험에 대해 긍정적인 평가보다는 부정적인 평가가 더 많은 데에는 이와 같은 과정을 통한 이해의 부재가 그 원인이라고 할 수 있다. 양장이나 단장 형식의 시조가 독립적이지 못하고 평시조(3장)의 형식을 단순하게 축소한 것에 불과하다는 인식을 주는 것은 하나의 독립된 미학 혹은 미학의 정체성을 성립시키기 위한 조건들을 충족시키고 있지 못하기 때문이다. 양장시조나 단장시조는 평시조에서 유래하지만 그것과는 다른 낯설고 독립적인 형식과 세계를 창출할 때 비로소 하나의 양식으로서의 존재성을 획득하게 되는 것이다.

The major forms born through the experiment since the modern times are 'Yangjangshijo', 'Danjangshijo(Jeoljangshijo, Hotshijo), Sajangshijo, Banshijo, Yeoncheopshijo(Gyeopshijo), and Honhapyeonhyeongshijo. The Yangjangshijo and Danjongshijo remind us of that Korean poets have eagerly concerned at the experiment of the form. The fixed form of Shijo is 3 verses, 6 phrases, and 45 letters as Pyeongshijo. The experimental form is condensing one verse or two verses into yangjang and danjang each other. The poets usually concentrated on the structural arrangement such as verse, phrase, line, syllable, and foot in the Shijo form itself. It is about just the form related with argument on the Shijo's style. The experiment focused only at the form itself reminds us of that the argument on many elements and conditions besides the form are overlooked. The overlook makes understanding harder about Yangjangshijo or Danjangshijo as variation from Pyeongshijo. Then it disturbs the establishment of identification as a style. It is to be studied how the variation forms were separated from Pyeongshijo in the historical context of Shijo literature, in order to establish the identity of Danjang or Hotshijo. And then the form of Danjang or Hotshijo such verse, phrase, and letters and the rules are to be understood. The ideology and the view of the world working in the basement of the form should be also researched. And how it works in the social communication system and enjoyment process should be known first. The experimental form of Danjangshijo and Yangjangshijo are evaluated negatively. It is why the process referred above is not understood yet. Yangjang or Danjangshijo is recognized to be simply reduced from Pyeonshijo dependently. It is also why the form doesn't have the conditions to establish the independent aesthetic or the identity. Yangjangshijo and Danjangshijo are derived from Pyeonshijo but the identity as a style can be won only when it creates new and independent form and world which is different from the Pyeongshijo.
