Abstract
Today, major metropolitan cities in the world meet the situation to be short of available land over the ground due to the concentrated industries, population influx, and so on, so that they have difficulties in securing green belts upon inflation of land cost. Hence, the interest in the underground space has been increased. It is urgently required to prevent malfunctioning of the existing urban environment because of the urban socioeconomic changes in advance, and to develop underground space in the city as the counter measure to improve the devastated urban environment qualitatively from lots of newly constructed large scaled buildings. In addition, environmental destruction issues have been raised over the world inevitably from the progressions of industrialization and urbanization, and eco-friendly paradigm for the future development has been strongly emerged to sustain the development without pollution or destruction on the natural environment. Sunken Space provides with the values to change the weakness of underground space with difficulties in natural lighting or ventilation into eco-friendly and high-quality space by offering sense of openness in the closed underground space, upon development of upper open space in the underground space such as buildings or plazas in the city. In reality, its application has not been activated well because of lack of perception change on the underground space utilization and burden of initial investment cost. In this study, the characteristics of the underground space as well as the importance of its utilization were deducted and analyzed from the reviews of literatures and previous studies. With integrations of the data such as site investigations and the pictures for case analysis, this study aimed to suggest the activation of Sunken Space which is the improved eco-friendly underground space from the problems of existing underground space including ventilation, lighting, sound-proofing, and so on.
