The present study examined how coarticulatory vowel nasalization is realized under prosodic conditioning in Korean (i.e., prominence and boundary markings), and compares the results with existing data on English to test whether to what extent the effects are observed cross-linguistically or language-specifically. Under prominence, the vowel’s [oral] feature was enhanced by resisting to the nasal influence in both CVN# and #NVC words, regardless of the nasal duration. Boundary-related effects in domain-initial position showed an enhancement of consonant-vowel contrast, demonstrating shorter nasal duration. At phrase-final position, vowel was more nasalized, attributing to the natural declination of oral articulatory force. Cross-linguistic comparison between Korean and English suggests that prominence revealed similar focus-induced effect (enhancement of [oral] feature for vowel), despite the fact that the two languages have distinct prominence systems. Boundary effects were observed to be more language-specific, possibly due to the denasalization process that is on-going in Korean word-initial nasal consonants.-
