1980년대 초반, 소극장 등장과 그 배경에 관한 연구

Abstract

1980년대는 한국영화산업이 가장 침체했던 시기였다. 1970년대부터 시작 된 관객의 감소는 1980년에 이르면 그 정도가 심각했다. 1980년 시작된 컬러 방송은 침체된 영화계에 심리적 충격을 안겨주었다. 이에 따라 정부가 내놓은 대책은 스크린쿼터제 강화와 같은 한국영화의 제작을 활성화시키기 위한 것이었다. 그러나 이는 1970년대 내내 유명무실하게 시행되어 온 것으로 침 체한 영화시장을 활성화 시키는데 효과가 없음이 증명된 방안이었다. 영화시장이 심각하게 축소된 상황에서 소위 삼류극장이라고 할 수 있는 3번, 4번 영화관의 손실은 더욱 커졌다. 1980년대 초반 서울 시내 곳곳에서 영화관의 폐업이 속출했다. 연극계의 주장에서 시작된 300석 이하, 300제곱미터 이하 규모의 소극장 설치 자유화는 영화관업자들에게 탈출구와 같았다. 소극장은 1982년 말부터 들어서기 시작하여 폐관한 중, 대형 규모의 영화관의 자리를 빠르게 대신하였다. 이렇듯 소극장의 등장으로 한국영화시장은 일정한 규모를 지킬 수 있었고 1980년대 한국영화가 제작을 지속할 수 있는 물적 기반이 되었다. 새롭게 등장한 소극장은 지역적으로 흥미로운 특이성을 보였다. 주거지역으로 개발되어 아직 영화관이 존재하지 않던 강남지역에는 가족단위의 관객 들을 위한 안락하고 고급스러운 분위기의 영화관이 만들어졌다. 대학생들의 접근이 용이했던 신촌지역에는 대학생 관객들을 위한 영화, 연극, 각종 행사 들을 함께 할 수 있는 문화공간 형태의 소극장이 들어섰다. 악기전문상가인 낙원상가 주변에 위치한 파고다극장은 락음악과 퀴어문화와 같은 하위문화 의 중심지로 자리했다. 이처럼 1980년대 서울 전역에서 등장한 소극장은 지역별 특성을 지닌 새로운 영화문화가 형성되는 산실이었다 In the 1980s was a time when Korean film industry was the most sluggish. 1970 Decrease from the audience started in the 1970s had serious about that early in 1980.
