Abstract
This paper demonstrates a BIM-enabled architectural design analysis approach for the early spatial programming and building circulation using a script language named BERA (Building environment rule and analysis) Language. Beyond clash detection software, the more the advantages of BIM are known in the AEC-FM (Architecture, engineering, construction, and facility management) field, the more BIM-enabled applications have been introduced in the domain. There have been several pilot and actual projects to enhance the quality of building design based on BIM applications, and one of their major outcomes is specific design rule-checking software usually with complex graphical user interfaces. Those conventional software-driven approaches, however, have intrinsic limitations that include limited interfaces, restricted parameters, closed rules except pre-defined rules, etc. BERA Language and its applications enable users to define rules in a flexible way and to evaluate them in an intuitive way, and hence more analysis-purposed applications are available than the software-driven approaches. For the demonstration presented in this paper, we used a modified test-model and defined appropriate BERA program code and Java code that are executable on the given BIM models using IFC formats.
