미술표현매체에 대한 인식 확장을 위한 감상-표현 프로그램 연구

Abstract

미술이라는 교과는 기본적으로 매체 중심적인 특징을 가지고 있다. 매체란 미술 활동에서 활용되는 모든 재료 및 용구, 기법을 포괄하는 의미이며 미술 표현활동의 전 과정에 걸쳐서 중요한 의미를 가지고 있는 것으로, Eisner와 Lowenfeld를 비롯한 여러 학자들이 미술 표현에서 매체 교육의 중요성에 대하여 이야기한 바 있다. 이러한 표현매체의 종류와 쓰임은 현대미술에 와서 더욱 확장된 모습을 보이고 있지만 정작 학생들이 배우고 활용하는 표현매체들은 이러한 현대미술의 변화를 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있다. 현재 미술교육에서는 표현매체의 중요성을 알려주는 데 소홀한 경우가 많고, 표현활동에 있어 확장된 매체들에 대한 경험을 할 수 있는 활동의 기회가 적다는 아쉬움이 남는다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 부분을 개선하고자 학생들에게 현대미술에서 표현매체가 가지는 중요성과 의미를 알려주고, 그들이 직접 다양한 매체들을 탐구하여 효과적인 표현활동으로 연결할 수 있도록 하는 것을 목적으로 한 매체 중심의 미술교육 프로그램을 개발하고자 하였다. 이러한 목적에 따라 우선 매체에 관한 문헌 조사를 통해 기본적인 표현매체의 의미와 역할, 미술사 속 매체의 발전과 그 영향 및 현대미술 작가들의 작업 과정 속 표현매체의 활용을 알아보았으며, 미술교육에서 매체교육이 필요한 근거를 찾아 정리하였다. 그리고 이어 현 학교현장에서 활용되고 있는 미술 교과서 11종을 분석하여 현재 미술교육에서 표현매체가 얼마나 다양하게 제시되고 있는지, 현대미술의 확장된 모습이 어떻게 다루어지고 있는지, 학생들이 학습활동에서 활용하고 있는 표현매체의 종류는 어떻게 구성되는지 등을 알아보고자 하였고, 이러한 내용을 바탕으로 표현매체의 확장을 중심으로 한 감상-표현 프로그램을 개발하였다. 감상 활동에서 표현 영역의 매체 탐구 및 제작 활동으로 이어지는 이 프로그램은 교과서의 참고 도판을 적극적으로 반영하였으며 단순히 매체에 대한 인식 확장만을 도모하는 것이 아니라 학생들이 직접 탐구하고 응용하는 단계를 거쳐 보다 심도 있는 경험을 할 수 있도록 구성하였다. 이 프로그램의 구체적인 기대효과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 프로그램은 학생들이 표현매체에 대해 관심을 가질 수 있는 기회이자 우리 생활 속 현대미술 매체들을 알려줌으로써 학생들과 미술의 거리감을 줄이는 데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 또한 교과서의 내용을 적극적으로 반영 및 구성하여 프로그램의 확장에도 다양한 가능성을 가지고 있다. 둘째, 다양한 표현매체들을 중심으로 한 감상 활동은 현대미술에 대한 시야를 확장시키고 새로운 시각으로 미술을 바라볼 수 있는 계기가 되며 미술에서 매체가 가지는 중요한 의미를 인식할 수 있도록 한다. 셋째, 다양한 매체를 활용해보는 기회를 통하여 미술 표현에 대한 부담감과 긴장감을 해소시켜 학생들이 보다 적극적인 미술 활동을 하도록 촉진할 수 있다. 또한 탐구를 통한 직접적인 경험은 추후 다양한 매체 활용의 가능성을 높이며 학생들의 다양한 감각 발달에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다. 결과적으로, 본 연구는 표현매체 중심의 미술교육 프로그램을 통해 학생들의 인식을 확장할 수 있도록 하고 표현매체에 대해 새롭게 인식하고 체험하는 경험을 통해 궁극적으로 미술표현에 대한 관심과 자신감을 신장할 수 있는 데 도움을 주고자 하였다. 나아가 다양한 후속 연구를 통하여 표현매체의 교육이 더욱 다양화되고 활성화되기를 기대하는 바이다.; The subject of art is characterized basically by its focus on media. The term media encompasses all materials, tools, and techniques used in art activities and holds important significance across all the processes of expressive activities in the domain of art. Many scholars including Eisner and Lowenfeld have talked about the importance of media education in artistic expressions. The types and uses of such expressive media have further expanded in contemporary art, but the ones learned and used by students do not reflect these changes to contemporary art right. The purpose of this study was to develop a media-centric art education program designed to teach the students the importance and significance of expressive media in contemporary art and help them make an inquiry into various media themselves and link them to effective expressive activities in order to improve the current situation. The study first examined various literature materials on media to understand the meanings and roles of expressive media, the development and influence of media in art history, and the uses of media by contemporary artists. The study then analyzed 11 types of art textbooks currently used by the students in school and established a ground for media education. The content of an art education program based on these grounds was comprised around art media. The program would offer the students a chance to appreciate and analyze works made of various materials and then make an inquiry into art media in various ways. The last step for them to take would be to make a piece of art themselves by utilizing the features they discovered in the previous activities. It is important here to encourage them to broaden their awareness of art media and explore and utilize them first-hand. This approach will help them understand art media more profoundly. This program has the following expected effects: first, the students will be able to take interest in art media and discover media around them thanks to the program, thus narrowing their distance to art. Secondly, the activity of analyzing works with a focus on various art media will give them an opportunity to look at art from a new perspective and develop aesthetic discernment. Finally, the activity of using various art media first-hand will help them mitigate a sense of burden and tension for artistic expressions and thus engage in more active artistic activities. In short, this program will help the students expand their experience and knowledge about the media of art and ultimately increase their interest and confidence in artistic expressions. Furthermore, the present study will be hopefully followed by various follow-up researches to promote the diversification and vitalization of art media education further.
