Abstract
Since the lithium oxygen batteries are operated based on the formation and decomposition of lithium-oxygen compounds by reaction of the O2 gas supplied from the outside and the lithium ion from Li metal, they exhibit 8~9 times higher specific energy densities (3505 Wh kg-1) theoretically compared to lithium ion batteries which are operated by insertion and de-insertion of lithium ions into the heavy metal oxide electrodes. However, irreversible and poor conductive characteristics of lithium peroxide (Li2O2), which is the main discharge product of Li-O2 batteries, cause deterioration of electrode surface, pore clogging, and decrease of Li source. As a result, Li-O2 batteries have low energy efficiency, limited capacity, and very short cycle life. Therefore, to increase the efficiency by lowering the overpotential by facile decomposition of the discharge products and to induce reversible driving is the main task of the Li-O2 battery development. Many methods have been proposed for this purpose and the application of liquid catalysts have been focused due to their clear effect on Li2O2 decomposition. A variety of redox mediators (RMs) have been used as liquid catalysts in electrolytes for the facile decomposition of Li2O2, and halide compounds are the most reported liquid catalysts. However, there is a controversy between the results of research on whether halide compounds and their redox reactions are suitable for Li-O2 batteries. Therefore, the present study evaluates the suitability of reported halide compound as liquid catalysts in Li-O2 batteries, proposes new halide compound, and discusses ways to improve the effectiveness of these liquid catalysts. First, the suitability of previously adapted LiI (lithium iodide) as a liquid catalyst of Li-O2 batteries was evaluated. Different electrochemical behavior of Li-O2 batteries due to change of the discharge products from Li2O2 to LiOH by application of LiI are confirmed and related side reaction mechanism was suggested. Next, the use of LiBr (lithium bromide) as an alternative liquid catalyst to solve LiOH formation and irreversibility problems of LiI liquid catalysts was investigated. When LiBr was used as a liquid catalyst, more improved performance of Li-O2 batteries based on stable Li2O2 formation and decomposition could be obtained, and comparative experiment and consideration according to electrolyte conditions (water and solvent) were carried out together. Finally, in order to suppress the reducing effect of liquid catalysts and lithium metal corrosion, control of LiBr and LiTFSI concentration in the electrolyte and protection of lithium metal anode were carried out together. This study suggests Li-O2 batteries which can optimize and maintain the effect of LiBr as a liquid catalyst for a long term cycling test. In this way, stable and efficient liquid catalysts and related cell conditions for Li-O2 batteries are proposed by verifying, modifying, and improving research on halide RMs.
