Abstract
According to previous research, a top-down rehabilitation approach that controls robot movement by recognizing human gait intention through the action signal of the brain can enhance the rehabilitation effect. Relatively, the electromyography(EMG) signal is robust to noise, has good signal reproducibility in a single trial, and contains direct information related to joint motion, thus suitable for bio-signal based intent recognition. A recent research has proposed and verified a method of estimating the walking speed by using the fact that the soleus EMG activation is proportional to walking speeds. However, the prediction of the walking speed at low speed is inaccurate and the R-square value of the regression curve model was low. In this study, we proposed a new walking speed prediction method to solve the problems of the previous study. The first idea is the relationship between walking speed and force in terms of energy. In Newton's law of kinetic energy, the square of velocity and kinetic energy are proportional. The soleus is the main muscle that propels the body forward on walking. The amplitude of the EMG signal is proportional to the force generated by the muscle in the joint. we propose the square root of EMG signal amplitude of soleus as an EMG signal feature. Second, in this study, the soleus EMG signal waveform length maximum value in the pre-load phase and the push-off phase were measured and extracted as features for speed prediction. The force to move the body forward in the stance phase is generated not only in the push-off phase but also in the pre-load phase. However, in previous studies, only the push-off phase was used and the force of the pre-load phase was not considered. The proposed method is compared with the method used in the previous study by walking experiment with five healthy subjects. The R-square value of the walking speed prediction model made by the finally proposed feature is improved by 10.3 % than the feature used in the previous study. And the finally proposed method improves the performance of the prediction model of walking speed without being biased in the range of high speed or low speed. The proposed walking speed prediction method improves accuracy mainly at low speeds and improves precision at high speeds to predict a correct walking speeds throughout the speed range. Therefore, the proposed method can be used to control the speed of the robot during rehabilitation training using the exoskeleton robot by predicting the walking speed of hemiplegic patients after stroke.
