1940년대 식민지 조선에서의 ˂일본뉴스˃

Abstract

중일전쟁 이후 뉴스영화의 유행 속에 일본에서는 뉴스영화 부문의 일원화가 이루어졌다. 그 결과, 1940년 4월 15일 사단법인 일본뉴스영화사가 설립되고 1940년 5월 14일부터 일본 유일의 뉴스영화 <일본뉴스>가 제작되어 6월 11일부터 공개되었다. 1941년 5월 1일에는 문화영화의 배급을 겸하는 사단법인 일본영화사 체제가 구축되었다. 일본의 가장 파급력있는 뉴스영화로 자리매김한 <일본뉴스>는 초기부터 식민지 조선에도 커다란 영향력을 행사하였다. 경성일보사를 통해 배급 체제가 갖추어지고뉴스영화 전문관을 위주로 상영 활동이 이루어졌다. 아울러 일본과의 연동으로 1940년부터 1942년에 걸쳐 진행된 제작, 배급, 흥행 부문에서의 통제화 정책의 일환으로 마련된 조선에서의 문화영화, 뉴스영화의 강제상영이라는 제도적 장치가 이를 뒷받침하였다. <일본뉴스>는 빠르게는 1주일 정도의 시간 차를 유지하며 식민지 조선에서도 배급, 상영되었는데, 그것이 일률적인 것은 아니었고 상영 시기, 지역, 방식, 상황 등에 따라 그 양상을 조금씩 달리하였다. <일본뉴스>에는 조선 관련 뉴스도 일부포함되었다. 이를 통해 제국 일본이 부여한 식민지 조선(인)의 표상이 화면에 제시되기도 하였다. 그러면서 <일본뉴스>는 조선 유일의 뉴스영화였던 <조선시보>를 대체하며 식민지 조선에서 자신의 위상을 더욱 높여갔다. 이처럼, 1940년대 식민지 조선에서의 뉴스영화는 전쟁 동원과 수탈로 점철되는 전시체제 하의 시대적 특수성과 밀접하게 연결되어 있었고, 그 중심에는 <일본뉴스>가 자리하고 있었다.The newsreel was produced in a unified manner in Japan in the wake of its rising popularity after the Sino-Japanese War. As a result, Japanese Newsreel Corp. was founded on April 15, 1940; it produced Japan News, the nation’s only newsreel, from May 14 and presented it to the public from June 11 the same year. On May 1 the following year, the corporation refurbished itself as a distributor of both cultural films and newsreels. Having been established as the most powerful newsreel company in Japan, Japan News exerted an enormous influence on the colonized Joseon from the beginning of its colonial rule. After having obtained its distribution channel through the Gyeongseong Ilbo (the Gyeongseong Daily), Japan News was released mostly in the cinemas solely devoted to presenting newsreels. As part of the Japanese plans to control the production, the distribution, and the box-office records of films between 1940 and 1942, an institutional apparatus was made to force Joseon to screen cultural films and newsreels in the country. Japan News was distributed and screened in the colonized Joseon with a time difference of a week after the original presentation in Japan. The formats of Japan News presented in Joseon somewhat varied in accordance with the period of presentations, regions, production styles, and the circumstances. In some cases, the contents of Japan News included news stories on Joseon, through which the Japanese empire carved out the image of the colonized Joseon and its people as it intended to show to the viewers. Meanwhile, Japan News replaced Joseon Sibo (Joseon News) -the only newsreel of Joseon- thus raising its status in the colonized Joseon. In conclusion, the newsreel in the colonized Josoen was closely related to the special circumstances during the war period characterized by war mobilization and exploitation. And Japan News stood at the center of the situations.
