한국 현대 소설의 ‘과학’과 철학적․소설적 질문 - 김보영과 배명훈의 SF를 중심으로

Abstract

지금까지 SF로 약칭되는 과학소설에 대한 논의는 본격문학과 구분되는 장르문학이라는 이유로 주류적인 문학사의 관점에서는 배제되었다. 하지만 2000년대를 전후하여 본격문학계와 장르문학계를 아우르는 작가들이 등장하면서 이러한 경계의 의미를 작품의 질적인 차원에서 찾기는 어려워졌다. 이제 한국 문학사에서 SF는 본격 혹은 주류 문학과 질적으로 구분되는 장르문학이 아니라 주제적인 차원에서 구분되는 소설의 다양한 하위 부류 중 하나의 영역을 차지하게 되었다고 말할 수 있다. 배명훈과 김보영은 이런 관점에서 SF를 본격 문학의 범주에 드는 보편 소설의 영역으로 끌어들인 대표적인 작가이다. 본 논문에서는 두 작가의 작품을 통해 한국 현대 SF의 달라진 위상과 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다.이에 대한 논의에 앞서 한국 현대 소설에서 ‘과학’이 갖는 의미를 먼저 살펴보았다. 먼저 한강의 「바람이 분다, 가라」를 통해 과학적 인식이 가져다주는 세계에 대한 해명이 어떻게 현대 소설의 질문과 맞닥뜨릴 수 있는지를 살펴보았다. 구체적인 과학의 사유가 소설적 질문에 대한 하나의 답을 제시할 수 있었던 것은 한강이라는 작가의 개인적 차원이 아닌 변화된 사회 현실의 차원에 근거한 것이다. 다음으로는 일반 소설론에서의 개연성을 과학적 개연성과 연결시키고 리얼리티의 개념을 담화적 구성에 의해 얻어지는 리얼리티의 효과의 관점에서 살펴봄으로써 SF의 리얼리티를 재고해보았다.김보영은 ‘낯섬 estrangement과 인식 cognition’이라는 SF의 기본시학에 충실하다. 그는 관습화된 인간적 경험과 일상을 낯설게 제시함으로써 인간 자체에 대한 인식을 새롭게 갱신하고자 한다. 이런 점에서 김보영의 작품은 생명체로서 인간의 가치를 새롭게 성찰한다. 이와 달리 배명훈은 인간의 정체성을 우주적 차원에서 찾는다. 그의 작품에서 지구와 외계, 인간과 외계인은 우주의 차원에서 균질화된다. 김보영의 생명체로서의 인간 자체, 배명훈의 우주적 정체성은 근대의 인간중심주의와는 차원을 달리 한다. 그 의의는 이에 내재된 발전 논리에 대한 비판에 있다. 이들의 SF가 현대사회와 관련하여 갖는 의의 또한 여기에 있다.In the history of Korean literature, science fiction is not a genre literature which is divided from the professional or mainstream literature any more. Instead, it now is one of the diverse sub-categories which are differently classified from the thematic aspect. From this perspective, Bae Myeong-hoon and Kim Bo-yeong are leading writers who brought ‘science fiction’ into the realm of novel.Before investigating these writings, the significance of ‘science’ in Korean modern novels was examined. How the explanation on the world brought by scientific cognition meets the questions on modern novels was investigated through analysis on ‘the Wind Blows. Now Go!’ written by Han Gang. By reviewing the plausibility in a general theory of novel in connection with scientific plausibility and concept of reality from the reality effects obtained through discourse configuration, the reality of science fiction was examined.Kim Bo-yeong"s writings remind us of anthropocentrism as a creature. On the contrary, Bae Myeong-hoon attempted to discover human identity in cosmic aspects. In his works, the earth, the outer space, human and aliens are homogenized from the cosmic perspective. Kim Bo-yeong’s anthropocentrism and Bae Myeong-hoon’s cosmic identity fundamentally differ from contemporary individual or anthropocentrism. The meaning can be discovered in criticism on the intrinsic development logic. Therefore, their science fictions regarding a modern society are meaningful.
