Abstract
This article analyzes Ashikaga Yoshikatsu's sudden death from a political viewpoint. Yoshikatsu had risen to shogunate after his father, bloody Yoshinori(義敎) killed by a Daimyo(大名)in 1441. He fell into critical condition suddenly in 1443. Yoshikatsu suffered not only from diarrhea, but also from vengeful ghosts of Daimyo killed under Yoshinori's tyranny and its aftermath. Vengeful ghosts of Daimyo petitioned the Bakufu(幕府) for restoration of families, but Bakufu turned down their petitions. Bakufu's standpoint was ruled by mechanics of politics appeared after Yoshinori's death. The retrieving of purged Daimyo's honor meant that the other Daimyo's interests which had formed under Yoshinori's purge campaign, should be readjusted. But, there were no governmental authority which could readjust the interests. Under this circumstance, the restoration of purged Daimyo meant political gamble which could shake the basis of Bakufu. Accordingly, the vassal's contention was not accepted by Bakufu. No doubt, gotten frustrated vassals had a grudge against Bakufu. Under these contexts, Yoshikatsu fell into critical condition suddenly. The vassal's hatred against Bakufu was expressed as vengeful ghosts of Daimyo, and the ghosts asserted the restoration of families. But, because of the mechanics of politics appeared after Yoshinori's death, the petition of ghosts was predestinated to fail. As a result, Yoshikatsu died young. In short, Yoshikatsu was a political scapegoat of the mechanics of politics appeared after Yoshinori's death.
