보수언론에 대한 노출과 이슈에 대한 태도의 변화:한국 대학생들의 정치정보 수용과정을 중심으로

Abstract

이 연구는 한국의 보수언론이 시민들의 정치적 태도에 미친 영향에 관한 하나의 탐색적 연구이다. 이 연구는 한국의 주요도시에 소재하는 대학의 재학생들을 대상으로 실험 및 설문조사를 진행하였으며, 미디어에 대한 이들의 노출이 이념성향과 같은 사전정향(predisposition)에 의존하여 선별적으로 이루어지고 있는지, 아울러 미디어를 통해 전달되는 정치정보가 이들의 인지수준 및 이슈에 대한 태도에 어떠한 영향을 주는가를 분석하였다. 분석결과 이 연구는 대학생들의 경우 정치정보에 대한 선택적 노출(selective exposure)이 이루어지고 있으며, 보수적 신문(종이와 온라인)에 대한 노출이 복지확대, 재벌개혁, 남북관계 개선, 환경문제와 같이 다양한 진보적 이슈의 중요성에 대한 인식을 약화시킨다는 점과 함께 선택적 해석(selective interpretation)을 통해 기존의 보수적 성향이 강화된다는 점을 밝혀냈다. 아울러 이 연구는 이념적으로 균형 있는 정보가 제공될 경우 그 효과가 상쇄될 가능성이 존재한다는 사실을 밝혀냈다. 이러한 분석결과를 토대로 저자들은 대학생들이 이념적으로 편향된 정보에 매몰되지 않도록 정치정보에 대한 접근경로를 다양화하려는 노력과 함께, 특정한 이념성향을 가진 언론사들의 과도한 시장점유를 방지하려는 노력이 이루어져야 한다고 주장한다.This study is an attempt to explore how the exposure to conservative media affects political orientations of Koreans. Conducting a survey and an experiment of undergraduate students in major cities, this study shows that there exist robust tendencies of selective exposure and of selective interpretation. Conservative respondents are more likely to be exposed to conservative media. Furthermore, exposure to conservative media weakens progressive-issue priority and intensifies conservative ideological orientation. These findings suggest that promoting public access to ideologically diverse political information and institutional constraints on ideologically biased media conglomerates not to dominate Korea's media market are required for the democratic deepening of Korea.
