고봉 기대승의 문인과 그 의미

Abstract

고봉 奇大升(1527∼1572)은 한국 지성사에서 빼 놓을 수 없는 인물이다. 그러나 현재 고봉의 문인은 거의 없다 해도 과언이 아니다. 그의 짧은 생애 탓에 학문이 단절되었던 이유가 컸다. 그 외에는 정치적인 구도가 크게 작용한다. 퇴계를 통해 존재 증명을 했지만 퇴계를 통해 그는 지워졌다. 퇴계와의 관계를 마냥 긍정적으로 볼 수만은 없는 부분이다. 퇴계가 엄청난 흡입력으로 고봉의 기억될 공간마저 사라지게 한 것은 아닐까. 또 율곡과는 반목이 심했다. 고봉의 정치적 견해에 대한 율곡의 반감은 생각보다도 훨씬 더하다. 이로써 그는 퇴계에게 흡수되고 율곡에게 배척되었다. 그는 동인, 서인 어느 쪽에서도 지분을 확보할 수는 없었다. 이호민을 포함한 거의 모든 문인들의 문집에서 고봉과 관련된 기록을 찾아보기 힘들었다. 의식적으로 기억에서 삭제하지 않고서는 설명하기 힘든 부분이다. 奇自獻(1562∼1624) 같은 사람의 정치적 선택도 고봉에게 불리하게 작용했던 것 같다. 그는 서인계에게 지탄을 받았고 동인계도 호의적으로 보지 않았다. 고봉의 문인들은 의병으로 활약한 이가 많다. 정확하게 그 숫자가 어떻게 되는지 현재로서는 파악할 수 없다. 하지만 이때 고봉의 문인들 중 상당한 인물들이 전란에 목숨을 잃었던 것만은 분명해 보인다. 제자의 활동과 지명도가 스승 사후에 스승의 위치를 규정한다. 그를 가장 확실하게 기억해 줄 사람들의 부재는 그의 부재를 가속화시켰다. 본고는 고봉의 문인이 사라졌다는 것을 증명한 셈이다. 잊힌 그를 온전히 복원하는 데는 왜 잊혔는가에 대한 원인을 찾아보는 작업이 우선이어야 한다. 남은 자료가 많지 않지만 좀 더 치밀하게 하나하나 모아 분석할 필요가 있다. 이 작업을 계기로 관련 문인들의 자료 속에 흩어져 있는 고봉의 흔적들을 정밀히 추적해 볼 것을 기대한다. Gobong Gi Daeseung(奇大升, 1527∼1572) can't be missed in the discussion on the history of mentality in Korea. However, it is not too much to say that there is almost none who knows him at present. It's mainly because his short life broke his academic life. Another reason was the political system. He was ignored in the literary world by Toegye even thought he became prominent through Toegye. Furthermore, he was severely at feud with Yulgok. The animosity of Yulgok against the political view of Gobong was beyond what anyone could imagine. Thus, he was ignored by Toegye but excluded by Yulgok. He couldn't secure his position both in Dongin(Easteners) and Seoin (Westeners). A significant number of writers who knew Gobong participated in the army raised in the cause of justice. There is no data to accurately identify the number of such writers at present. However, a number of writers who were Gobong's acquaintance definitely died in the wars. The activities and publicity of disciples define their teachers' position in the society after the death of their teachers. The fact that there is none who can remind us of him accelerated his absence in the history of mentality in Korea. This paper proved that there were no more data on his acquaintances. It is required to find out why Gobong was completely forgotten before restoring his literary status. I hope the result of this paper will be the opportunity to throughly investigate his trace dispersed in the data of other writers
