거주지역의 민족구성이 혼인이주여성의 사회활동과 적응유형에 미치는 영향: 주변효과의 검증

Abstract

이 논문은 한국에 거주하는 혼인이주여성의 사회활동과 적응유형을 설명하는 요인 중 거주지역 민족구성의 주변효과를 파악하기 위한 것이다. 특히, 같은 시 군 구에 거주하는 외국인 아내 및 같은 민족 인구의 비중이 혼인이주여성의 사회활동과 적응유형에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 이 논문은 거주지역의 외국인 아내 비중이 높을수록 혼인이주여성의 사회활동을 촉진시키는 환경을 조성하며, 이들의 사회활동이 활발해질수록 적응형태에도 영향을 미칠 것으로 가정하였다. 이 논문에서는 혼인이주여성의 적응유형을 통합, 동화, 고립 및 주변화로 구분하고, 이들 네 가지 적응유형과 거주지역의 외국인 아내 및 같은 민족 인구의 비중과의 관계를 파악하는데 초점을 맞추었다. 분석을 위하여 『2009년 전국다문화가족 실태조사』의 원자료를 사용하였다. 아울러 외국인 아내 및 같은 민족 인구가 차지하는 비중을 각 시 군 구별로 계산하여 분석에 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 거주지역의 외국인 아내 비중이 높아질수록 혼인이주여성의 사회활동을 촉진시키고 고립 유형의 적응 개연성을 높이는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 주변효과는 대도시 지역에서보다는 중소도시 및 농촌 지역에서 더욱 뚜렷한 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 거주지역에 같은 민족의 인구가 많을수록 이들과의 접촉과 상호작용이 많아지고, 한국사회에 동화되기보다는 고립되는 적응형태를 나타내는 혼인이주여성이 많은 것으로 확인되었다.This paper explores the effects of ethnic composition of the residential area on the level of social activities and the type of adaptation of foreign wives in Korea. Micro-data from The 2009 Korean National Multi-cultural Family Survey are analyzed. Results reveal that the ethnic compositional environment exerts an independent effect on social activities and the type of adaptation, apart from socioeconomic and demographic variables. The level of social activities ceteris paribus rises substantially among foreign wives who live in an area with a large population of transnational couples. However, increased accessibility to and interaction with other foreign wives tend to lead to more ‘isolated’ type of adaptation rather than ‘assimilation’. These effects tend to be stronger when a foreign wife lives in non-metropolitan area. It is also found that higher proportion of the same ethnic population in the residential area is likely to be associated with the ‘isolated’ type of adaptation among foreign wives.
