『고영규전』의 서술 방식과창작 기법에 관한 연구

Abstract

고영규전』은 선교사 애니 베어드가 1911년에 쓴 소설이다. 그간 이 작품의 의의에 대해 관심을 갖는 연구자는 많았지만, 정작 이 소설의 문학적 성취 자체를 연구하는 데에는 부족했다. 이 글에서, 필자는 기존의 연구 경향을 반성하면서, 내적접근방법을 이용하여 이 작품의 서술 방식과 창작 기법을 분석하였다. 애니 베어드는 1909년 『한국의 새벽』이라는 작품을 썼다. 이것은 영어권 독자를 위해 쓴 보고서적 성격의 글이다. 애니 베어드는 이 책의 주요 인물과 구성을 이용해서 『고영규전』이라는 소설을 창작하였다. 예상독자와 글의 종류가 다르지만, 주요 인물과 구성이 같으므로 이 둘을 비교해서 달라진 점을 찾으면 작가의 창작 의도 및 서술의 중점이 어디에 있는지 알 수 있다. 기존의 연구는 대체로 여자의 처지를 중심으로 이 작품을 언급했다. 하지만 제목처럼 이 작품은 남자 주인공인 고영규를 중심으로 읽어야 한다. 애니 베어드는, 『한국의 새벽』에 있는 내용 중에서 남성이 여성에게 폭력을 가하는 장면, 한국 사람들이 미신에 매어서 사는 모습 등은 삭제하였다. 대신 남자 주인공 고영규의 변화를 중점으로 하면서 그의 주도하에 그의 가정이 기독교 신앙을 가진 모범적 가정으로 변하는 모습을 표현했다. 이 작품은 남성 중심으로 한 가정이 회복되는 모습을 보인 것이다. 또, 『고영규전』은 분명 ‘창작 소설’이므로 작가가 이 소설을 쓰면서 사용한 구성법과 수사법 등을 살펴야 한다. 애니 베어드는 질문에 답해가는 구성법으로 독자의 관심이 다른 곳으로 흩어지지 않게 하였으며, 심각한 현실을 그리되 이것을 유쾌하고 재미있는 표현으로 드러내어 독자의 흥미를 끌었다. 주변 자연물을 이용하여 기독교적 진리를 설명한 특징도 있다. 이것은 지적수준이 높지 않은 독자들이 내용을 이해하기 쉽도록 한 창작 기법이다. 이러한 방식은 애니 베어드의 작가적인 솜씨를 잘 드러낸 점이자 이 작품의 뛰어난 점이다.`The Story of Ko Young-kyu`` was written in 1911 by Annie Baird who was missionary. So Far, scholars have studied Korea`s politics, culture, and customs issues in the Japanese occupation period using the novel. Most of researchers considered it was a kind of records to know Korean culture and the influence of Christianity in the time of early twenty century. In the meantime, they were neglected how good is the novel`s literary achievement in itself. The novel is a creative fiction not historical Records. So focusing on this point, I describe how this work attempts to analyze and creative technique. we should read this novel as follows; Annie Baird wrote the novel named ``Daybreak in Korea`` in 1909. But 2 years later, ``The Story of Ko Young-kyu`` was written as the transformation of ``Daybreak in Korea``. She wrote the second book using the main characters and the plot of the first book. When comparing the two novels, we find the writer`s creative intentions. In the first novel, woman`s life was described for main stream, but for the second novel, ``The Story of Ko Young-kyu``, the main character was a man not a woman. So far people have been reading this novel centered on a woman. But we have to read focus on man, Ko Young-kyu not a woman, Gil Bo-bae. Yes, the title itself. In the second novel, Annie Baird was deleted the first novel`s story of a man striking a woman, the story of the people who worship superstition. Instead, the emphasis on male lead Ko Young-kyu change under his leadership and with his family in good standing of the Christian faith and expressed his home state of change. And this is a creative fiction, so we have to observe its composition, rhetoric, and style of writing etc. She expressed serious reality, yet she has used a pleasant style. The surrounding natural objects are also described features of Christian truth. This is for low intellectual level readers with an easy-to-understand content creation techniques. In this way, the author of the popular Annie Baird and workmanship for a well-exposed point of this work is excellent. By doing so, we come to know how great this work is. Annie Baird used the question and answer method. So readers could be focused on a novel.
