Abstract
This paper aimed at offering quantitative evidence of explicitation in translation into English through an analysis of patterns of inclusion and omission of optional that with the eight verbs ADMIT, BELIEVE, CLAIM, HOPE, KNOW, SAY, SUGGEST, and TELL. Based on the Corpus of Translated English Editorials (CoTEE) and the British National Corpus (BNC) Web version containing original English, the target structure of the optional that was investigated. On the basis of a comparison of concordance data from the two corpora, quantitative results served to illustrate the marked differences in use of that and zero with each form of the target eight verbs. The analysis of the corpus data shows that the that-connective is more frequent in TEC than in the BNCweb only for the verbs of CLAIM and SAY.
