Space industry is quite important to China. It has political meaning to show that China becomes a strong country as the development in this industry symbolizes science technology development of China. On the other hand, as technology in this industry is directly related with national defense such as missile, aviation and communication, it also has strategic meaning, as well. Therefore, Chinese government has supported this industry actively and has accomplished projects such as spacecraft launching and space station docking successfully. China will propel various space projects such as space station operation, moon exploration, and establishment of GPS in near future of Xi-Li administration. Thus, space industry in China is catching up that of developed countries rapidly in technology and market. Because of various competencies necessary during the innovation process, such successful catching up in space industry is quite rare in general developing countries. As a matter of fact, space industry is being led by ex-ultra-strong countries such as USA and Russia and EU and Japan are following them. Although Brazil, India and Korea make efforts to develop space industry, catch up speed is slow. With this background, this article analyzes success factors of space industry catch up in China from the perspective of innovation in complex product system (CoPS). Complex product system has high development cost and requires the reflection of customers` demands. Therefore, innovation in such system can be distinctively distinguished from the innovation of mass-produced commodity industry (Hobday, 1998). In analysis, this article focus on the best practices in manned spaceship launching projects of China in order to identify the causes of catch up success of China in space industry. Manned spaceship development plan of China is the case with all the characteristics of innovation of complex product system development, which is very important example achieving projects successfully in China. Through case studies, this article may be able to induce conclusions to give suggestions to the process of development of communication facilities, development of high speed railway, and development and construction of nuclear plants of the developing countries. Additionally, we may be able to forecast the direction and strategies of space industry in China by summarizing the progress of space industry in China.en_US
