유럽의 언론과 한국: 프랑스, 영국, 독일 언론에 나타난 한국의 이미지

Abstract

국가이미지에 대한 해외 주요 매스미디어의 높은 영향력에도 불구하고, 한국에 대한 해외 미디어의 보도 경향 및 한국의 국가이미지에 대한 연구는 제대로 이루어지지 않았으며,분석기간도 매우 제한적인 실정이다. 본 연구는 10년에 걸쳐 영국과 독일, 그리고 프랑스주요 미디어에 보도된 한국의 국가 이미지를 분석함으로써 변화의 추이를 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 그 의의가 있을 뿐만 아니라, 영국, 프랑스, 독일의 주요 엘리트 미디어 다수를분석대상으로 포함시킴으로써 편견 현상을 극복하려 노력하고 있다는 점에서 기존 연구들과의 차별성을 찾을 수 있다. 연구결과 한국에 대한 보도는 영국과 프랑스에서 꾸준히 증가세를 보이는 가운데 독일 언론의 보도 건수는 상대적으로 매우 적은 것으로 나타나고있다. 또한 전체적으로 독일 언론이 프랑스와 영국에 비해 한국에 대해 부정적 또는 비판적 기사를 게재하는 경향이 더 높은 것으로 나타나고 있다. 유럽에서 우리나라의 국가이익을 증진시키기 위해서는 무엇보다도 독일에서의 우리의 국가이미지를 개선할 필요가 있으며, 이를 위해서 독일 언론의 한국에 대한 보도 태도를 변화시키기 위한 ‘언론 외교’가시급히 요청된다.While it is well known that mass media is very influential in shaping the image of a nation, studies on how Korea has been portrayed in foreign press are very scarce. This study tries to fill the gap and traces the image of Korea as reported in major elite media of the UK, France and Germany. The result shows that while the frequency of reportage in the British and French media has been steadily increasing, the German media has been very stingy in covering Korea. In addition, the German media`s coverage of Korea has been consistently tinted with negative or critical tone. The British and French media seem to be more friendly to Korea when compared to the German media. Therefore, it is needed to improve the national image of Korea in the German media by launching ``media diplomacy`` to enhance Korea`s national interests in Germany and, ultimately, in whole Europe where Germany plays the role of prime mover of regional integration.
