텔레비전 다큐멘터리의 영상인류학과 식민주의 시선의 재현에 대한 문화 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 최근 지상파 방송 3사가 보여 주는 다큐멘터리의 장르적 변화를 우리 사회 변화와 문화의 기반에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 최근 인기를 끈 다큐멘터리는 대규모·장기 기획이라는 점과 함께 잘르적으로는 토착문화에 대한 관심, 참여적 양식, 대중 스타의 해설, 전문적 음악 사용을 특징으로 하고 있다. 이들 다큐멘터리가 장르적 진보, 미학적 성과, 대중적 인기까지 이끈 성공 가례를 보여 주지만, 보다 심층적으로는 식민주의적 시선을 공유하고 있다는 문화적 차원의 문제를 안고 있다. 이론적으로 본 연구는 포스트식민주의 이론을 근간으로 한국 사회에의 적용 가능성을 점검하고 영상 분석틀을 개발하여 다큐멘터리 영상 분석을 시도하고 있다. 19세기 서구 식민주의 영상의 양식이 21세기 한국의 다큐멘터리에 어떻게 모방·재현되고 있는지 구체적인 영상과 사운드 분석을 통해 보았다. 분석 대상으로는 2010년을 중심으로 1년여 동안 방영되었던 MBC 「아마존의 눈물」 ·「아프리카의 눈물」, SBS 「최후의 툰드라」, KBS 「푸른 지구의 마지막 유산콩고」를 살펴보았다.This study attempts to examine visual meaning of anthropological documentaries aired as TV programs, which are newly produced in South Korea. These TV programs try to demonstrate exotic lives of people who live in the hinterlands of the world. They present primitiveness` in as extreme a manner as possible. The motivations for emphasizing primitiveness in Korean television programs are related to social changes in Korea. In the recent past, multiculturalism was adopted as a cultural policy and Korean society has become more seriously committed to the acknowledgement of other ethnicities` cultures; as a result, anthropological interests have been disseminated throughout the society accordingly. By applying the methods of visual anthropology to analyze a subset of television programs made during 2010 for a one year period time, this study found that Korean television programs bring back the perspectives employed by colonial anthropologists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The visual representation of ``primitive lives`` shown in 19th century photography and 21th century Korean TV programs parallel each other, despite the geographical and technological differences.
