Abstract
A study on the enhanced oxidation of metallic uranium and uranium dioxide in oxygen gas plasma is carried out to develope a new dry processing technique of nuclear fuel materials for the future replacement of current wet processing. It is found that the oxidation rate increases by about 300% at 400℃ and 70% at 500℃, respectively, in case of UO₂ while it is enhanced by about 50% at 350℃ in case of metallic uranium. In addition, the rate increases with increasing plasma power. The results also show that the oxidation rate increases linearly with time, which means that surface reaction is the rate-controlling step. It turns out by OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) analysis that the increase in oxidation rate is ascribed to the direct participation of oxygen radicals produced in the plasma.
