초정 김상옥의 시조 미학

Abstract

초정 김상옥은 우리 근대 시조사에서 작품의 양과 질 모두 대가급의 성취를 이루어낸 시인이다. 그는 시조를 통해 다양한 형식과 소재를 변주한 미학적 장인이다. 몇 가지 사조나 유형으로는 그의 시조 미학을 설명하기 어렵지만, 그는 진즉부터 ‘고향’과 ‘고전’에 대한 함축적 지향을 보여주면서 작품 세계를 열었다고 할 수 있다. 또한 김상옥 시조에서는 관념보다는 경험적이고 일상적인 자연의 모습이 잘 드러난다. 이념의 상관물로서의 자연이 아니라, 생활적 구체를 지닌 자연 혹은 시인 자신의 내면과 깊이 상응하는 자연이 나타난다. 거기에 고전을 바탕으로 한 예술적 상상력을 얹은 것이다. 후기로 접어들수록 그는 일상과 내면을 적극 회복하면서 근대인의 일상과 내면이 어떻게 유비적으로 결속하는지를 일관되게 탐구하였다. 그리고 균형과 절조를 바탕으로 한, 풍경과 내면의 유추적 접점 구축을 견고하게 지향하였다. 그 결과 그는 시조를 통해, 시조에 대한 견고한 자의식과 미적 성찰을 통해, 개성적인 시적 진경을 보여준 것이다. 그렇게 그의 후기 시편들은 근대인의 일상과 내면이 어떻게 결속하는지를 일관되게 탐구하였고, 그 외연은 일상 너머 역사에까지 확장하게 되었다. 서구적 특수성에서 자라난 여타 역사적 장르와는 다른, 우리의 언어적이고 세계관적인 특성을 토양으로 발전되어온 시조를 우리가 더욱 애정있게 계승해야 한다는 점에서, 김상옥 시조는 우리가 발견해야 할 근대시조의 뚜렷한 한 전범(典範)으로 다가올 것이다.Kim Sangok was a poet accomplishing literary success both quantity and quality of works like a master. He was a craftsman changing various forms and materials. It is impossible to explain his sijo(traditional three-verse Korean poem) esthetics with some trends or types of literature. Nevertheless he showed connotative directivity on hometown and classics. In Kim Sangok’s sijo, experienced and ordinary figure of nature was well revealed rather than ideality. Not the nature connected with ideality, the nature including living concreteness and the nature deeply corresponding with inside of a poet himself indicated at the same time. In addition to this, he used imagination based on classics. In later period, he sequaciously researched how everyday life and mind of moderns figuratively connected with each other as he came through daily life and inner side. His sijo was aimed at construct analogic contact point between scenery and inner side based on balance and integrity. He clearly showed these real poetic figures through self-consciousness and esthetics introspection on sijo, and through sijo. Like that, his later poems positively recovered daily life and inner side, then they consistently researched how daily life inner side of moderns connected with each other. As a result, their denotation expanded to history beyond daily life. With affection, we must succeed sijo, which developed to foundation based on features of our language and outlook, not other genre arising from western features. The meanings of Kim Sangok’s sijo are to remember obvious model to reveal in these research process.
