Expressionism in W. B. Yeats and Jack Yeats

Abstract

W. B. Yeats is hardly treated as Expressionist in his poetry, though recently such attempts are made in his plays. In this essay, the possibility of reading some of his poetry as Expressionist work is touched on. Interestingly, Oskar Kokoschka is one of the first playwrights who tried an Expressionist style, not to mention his painting. Kokoschka was also the painter Jack seemed to have adored; after he met the Austrian painter Jack’s style underwent a big change. Jack Yeats’s later painting is to be classified into Expressionist work. The essay looks into such a trend in W. B. Yeats and Jack Yeats.W. B. 예이츠 연구에 있어 최근 희곡에서는 표현주의 연구가 있긴 하지만, 시를 표현주의 작품으로 읽지는 않았다. 본 논문은 그 가능성을 타진한다. 흥미롭게도, 오스카 코코슈카는 표현주의 희곡을 쓴 최초의 희곡작가이면서 표현주의 작품을 그리기도 한다. 코코슈카는 잭 예이츠가 존경하는 작가로 그의 작품을 본 후, 작품에 큰 변화가 온다. 이제 그의 작품은 표현주의 작품으로 분류되어야 한다. 본 논문은 이 두 형제의 표현주의를 다룬다.
