Abstract
Korea and Greece are two countries separated not only by vast geographic distance, but also by vastly distinct languages and cultures. Having lived in both Greece and Korea, I have always had a great deal of interest in how the Korean people perceive Greece. Therefore, I decided to research how one of the most famous Korean television programs, “Grandpas Over Flowers”, depicts Greece, and how the program has affected its audience’s views regarding Greece. It is very important to learn about the interactions between the two countries, both historically and currently. Considering this background before conducting the research is important because we need to see how Korean people have regarded Greece throughout the course of history. Furthermore, as the transmission of information has become much easier with the development of media technologies and with the advent of the information society in which we live, the two countries’ awareness of each other has substantially improved. With the expansion of Hallyu (The Korean Wave), the influence of Korean culture has spread not only throughout Asia but also to the Americas and Europe, including Greece. The conclusions drawn from this research can be applied to a variety of fields. Not only is it relevant to Media and Communication Studies and other social sciences, but also to the improvement of every aspect of Korean-Greek relations (political, economic, diplomatic, cultural), and most importantly the rise of Korean tourism in Greece. Through the information provided by this research, citizens of the two countries may be able to further embrace their dissimilarities and become more accepting of each other’s cultures. Last, but not least, this study provides knowledge of the general social, economic, and political environments of Korea and Greece, as well as a general understanding of the differences and similarities that exist between a European and an Asian country. Keywords: Greece, South Korea, travel program, TV, national image, culture, globalization, soft power
