The foundation of developing effective safety-related policies and countermeasures for local governments is identifying traffic safety levels. Local governments have performed a variety of research studies to derive useful methods of evaluating safety levels. Most studies have focused on developing indices based on actual historical data. However, recent advancements in-vehicle sensors and communication technologies provide invaluable research opportunities for exploring the relationships between hazardous driving events, individual vehicles, and crash potentials, which is the motivation of this study. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility for local governments to use in-vehicle digital tachograph (DTG) data to evaluate traffic safety. DTG data obtained from the eTAS system operated by the Korea Traffic Safety Authority and crash data records were used in this study. Hazardous driving events identified from DTG data were analyzed to derive independent variables in multiple linear regression models. Crash rates were used as dependent variables in the modeling. The statistical analysis conducted in this study suggests that DTG data can potentially be used for traffic safety evaluations. Although further research is required to develop more generalized conclusions, this study facilitates the expansion of using DTG data in the field of traffic safety evaluation.-
