거주지역의 민족구성이 혼인이주여성의 차별 경험과 주관적 건강인식에 미치는 주변효과

Abstract

이 논문은 한국에 거주하는 혼인이주여성의 차별 경험과 주관적 건강인식 수준을 설명하는 요인들 중에서 거주지역 민족구성의 효과를 파악하기 위한 것이다. 거주지역의 민족구성이 달라지면 혼인이주여성의 일상생활, 사회경제적 활동, 민족 및 문화정체성을 변화시키는환경이 조성되며, 이에 따라 차별 경험과 주관적 건강인식에도 영향을 미칠 것으로 가정하였다. 이 논문에서는 거주지역의 민족구성을 반영하는 두 가지 지표를 창출하여 혼인이주여성의 차별 경험 및 주관적 건강인식과의 관계를 파악하는데 초점을 맞추었다. 분석자료는2009년 전국다문화가족 실태조사 의 원자료에서 추출하였으며, 중국 조선족, 베트남 및 필리핀 출신의 아내들을 분석대상으로 삼았다. 아울러 251개 시･군･구 지역별로 외국인 인구및 같은 민족 인구가 차지하는 비중을 계산하여 분석에 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 거주지역에같은 민족의 인구가 많을수록 혼인이주여성이 차별 당할 개연성이 높아지며, 자신의 건강을부정적으로 인식하는 경향이 발견되었다. 이러한 경향은 부부의 교육수준, 혼인이주여성의취업 여부, 시부모와 동거 여부 및 대도시 거주 여부에 관계없이 일관적으로 나타났다. 이와는 대조적으로 거주지역의 외국인 인구 비중은 그 영향력의 강도가 상대적으로 약하지만, 혼인이주여성의 차별 경험 인식을 약화시키고, 건강인식을 호전시키는 방향으로 작용하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 주변효과는 중소도시 및 농촌지역에서보다는 대도시 지역에서 더욱뚜렷하였다. The main purpose of this paper is to explore neighborhood effects of ethnic composition on the risk of perceived discrimination and the level of self-rated health among marriage immigrant wives in Korea. Increased accessibility to other foreign immigrant wives and an environment with a favorable ethnic composition are likely to affect daily life and ethnic/cultural identity, which, in turn, exert effects on the risk of being discriminated against and the subjective health status of marriage immigrant wives. Utilizing micro-data from the 2009 Korean National Multi-cultural Family Survey and the ethnic composition data of 251 cities, counties and districts, this study conducted ANOVA and HLM regression analyses to examine the neighborhood effects of ethnic composition among Korean Chinese, Vietnamese and Filipino wives. Results of the analysis reveal that risk of perceived discrimination ceteris paribus rises substantially among foreign immigrant wives who live in an area with a large population of the same ethnic group. The proportion of the same ethnic population in a metropolitan residential area is found to be negatively associated with the perceived health status of foreign immigrant wives, apart from socioeconomic and demographic variables. A higher proportion of the same ethnic population in a residential area is likely to be associated with an isolated type of adaptation among foreign wives. These associations, in turn, lead to a higher level of perceived discrimination and a lower level of self-rated health among marriage immigrant wives. In contrast, higher proportion of foreign population in a residential area is found to be associated with lower risk of being discriminated against and exerts a positive effect on self-rated health. These neighborhood effects are found to be stronger when a foreign wife lives in a metropolitan area.
