Abstract
Compassion is one of helping behavior for people who have been experiencingsuffering. It is generated from the attention of someone else’s pain and the feeling their emotions, and then it is passed to them through some action in order to alleviate their suffering, such as verbal expression of support, granting of time or materials for recovery and practical help. Entering the modern society, because many people have been spending amount of time in the organization, it is no surprise that their sufferings arising from their personal live have a negative impact on both other employeesincluding oneself and organizations in connection with psychological, physical and financial outcomes. In this regard, the importance of managing and understanding employee’ the expressions of emotions, such as compassion, are emerging in organization. According to Blum (1980) who is one of the initial compassion researchers, purpose of compassion links more closely with alleviating negative conditions of sufferers rather than revitalization of a positive state of mind. In this study, based on broaden-and-build model of positive emotion theory, by integrating both results of preceding research that compassion can enhance positive affect and emotion of the people, and prospective of initial study of compassion that a sense of purpose of compassion is basically to alleviate their suffering, we have set up a hypothesis, effect of compassion can relieve anxiety as mediated by positive affect. To test hypothesis this study proposed, we survey 217 university student of department of Nursing Science in Kangwon. To discuss limited objects of compassion, based on preceding research of compassion and anxiety, we also empirically examine state- anxiety by dividing it two aspects as anxiety-present and anxiety-absent following Spielberger (1968, 1977). As a result, we found that compassion sufferer experienced is notnegatively related to anxiety-absent but anxiety-present in a statistically significant level. Furthermore, we also found mediating effects that positive affect fully mediates the relationship between experienced compassion and high-anxiety. These results indicated that compassion has an effect on the negative psychological states of the people such as anxiety. Especially, it has a more significant impact on alleviating the serious negative conditions such as jittery or strained that it does not mean that temporary or slight anxiety such as less stable or pleasant.
