This paper describes an approach to the assessment of building circulation by using quantitative data and applying its weight. People have considered building circulation because various requirements are regulated by design guide, building codes, etc. Furthermore, design decision making and assessment of building circulation plays an important role before construction stage. BIM (Building Information Modeling) and its applications enable us to examine various kinds of building design review tasks including circulation rule checking based on the rich building information. To expand the scope of building circulation review in automation, this paper is mainly dealing with qualitative issues that are usually ignored due to their implicit definition such as ‘comfortable circulation’ in circulation requirements. We describe how it can be quantitatively expressed in a certain approach. Quantitative data and its weight are the key aspects to convert implicit descriptions into explicit regulations. As an example, there are several useful quantitative data derived from BIM and its tool such as walking distance, spatial depth, number of turns, window area, spatial volume and so on. This paper aims to study an approach of quantifying circulation data which enables objective evaluation of qualitative, and arbitrary design. We also suggest a framework using weighted data of circulation properties such as 1) how long vertical distance and horizontal distance are 2) number of passing by spaces 3) number of turning spaces 4) passed window area per unit area, etc.
