Abstract
A Study on the Traditional Patterns of China based on Applying Vernacular Design YIDE HAN Dept,of SCHOOL OF DESIGN The Graduate School Hanyang University Chinese traditional patterns, a manifestation of Chinese folk art, form an integral component of traditional Chinese art. These traditional Chinese patterns symbolize the customs, political ideologies, and regional characteristics of individuals in diverse historical contexts of China. Through these distinctive traditional patterns, we can scrutinize the folk traditional patterns, which embody not only various auspicious meanings, but also reflect the wisdom of the populace in artistic aspects over thousands of years. As the times evolve, designers frequently incorporate foreign cultural elements into modern Chinese design and diversify with different artistic forms, yet traditional Chinese pattern elements remain the origin and foundation of Chinese vernacular design. It is crucial to effectively intertwine Chinese traditional patterns with vernacular design, as contemporary art design and native art design share countless parallels. For the effective collaboration of modern art design and native art design, it is imperative to comprehend the essence and composition of traditional folk art first, thus providing novel perspectives for contemporary art design. The diversity of modern art design is indebted to the numerous contents, forms and styles of traditional folk art, and thus it is necessary to ensure that traditional cultural connotations are not overlooked while also creating original artistic forms that resonate with contemporary aesthetic standards, thereby effectively intertwining Chinese traditional patterns with domestic design. The imperative for exploring traditional Chinese patterns is extensive. On the social value front, inquiry into traditional Chinese patterns can affirm cultural heritage, perpetuate superior traditional culture, foster better understanding of traditional and more relevant culture by current and future generations, and fortify the population's national pride and cultivate national spirit. These significant patterns symbolize disparate auspicious attitudes and distinct feelings, thus perpetuating these profoundly meaningful cultures can also ignite a patriotism in the populace. Comprehending traditional Chinese patterns substantively assists in the study of art disciplines. Furthermore, most traditional patterns imbue rich cultural connotations and hold significant literary significance, navigating the study of traditional patterns can assist in understanding the societal backgrounds, values, and customs of varying eras. This affords a deeper understanding of China's traditional culture. And traditional patterns may even become significant sources of inspiration in design. Through the investigation and application of traditional patterns, creativity can be enriched for designers and they might craft more distinctive and engaging works. In summary, traditional Chinese patterns possess colossal social value and profound cultural and art academic value. By forging ahead with the study and perpetuation of traditional Chinese patterns, traditional culture can be propelled forward, social exchange can be enhanced, and excellent aesthetics can be broadcasted. Simultaneously, these patterns offer vital resources and material from perspectives such as culture, art, history, etc., providing crucial resources and materials for subsequent generations' research and development. Therefore, we must valorize traditional patterns, strive to recognize their beauty and effectively meld traditional culture with contemporary art design, allowing it to exert its unique influence. The objective of this research is to comprehend the dynamics between Chinese traditional patterns and vernacular design. Secondly, it seeks to identify effective ways to blend Chinese traditional patterns with contemporary vernacular design. A strategic approach that appropriates the national traditional culture while facilitating its evolution for a modern day audience. This research primarily focuses on the utilization of significant traditional patterns across various periods of China in product packaging, interior design, clothing design, etc. The methodology encompasses document and image material analysis. Comprehensive literature pertinent to China's traditional patterns and contemporary vernacular design have been researched and analyzed. After gathering substantial data, additional literature that outlines strategies to effectively integrate traditional Chinese patterns into indigenous design was mined. Subsequently, case analysis techniques were employed to study the connotation, characteristics and functionality of vernacular design. The evolution, representative significance, and artistic characteristics of Chinese traditional patterns during different eras were also scrutinized. Subsequently, through analysis of existing cases using traditional Chinese patterns in areas such as interior design, tea packaging design, and clothing design, a comprehensive comprehension of how to adeptly incorporate Chinese traditional patterns into modern vernacular design, and the appropriate methodologies that should be adopted when implementing traditional Chinese patterns into modern vernacular design, was achieved. This analysis aims at understanding how traditional Chinese patterns can blend seamlessly with modern vernacular design, ensuring the retention of Chinese traditional cultural features while incorporating contemporary attributes, developing contemporary vernacular design that aligns with the aesthetic preferences of modern individuals. The study is composed of five sections. The inaugural section expounds the research background, aims, confines, and methodologies. The second section focuses on vernacular design, presenting fundamental connotations, distinctive aspects and operations of vernacular design, coupled with exemplar analyses of vernacular design art through pertinent illustrations. The third section primarily probes into the genesis and evolution of Chinese traditional patterns across varied epochs, their evolution and significance emblemized by renowned traditional patterns in China, culminating in an examination of the artistic characteristics of traditional auspicious patterns in China. The fourth section scrutinizes the nexus between traditional patterns and vernacular design, delving into relationships, roles of traditional patterns in vernacular design, integration of traditional patterns with vernacular design, and optimally applying traditional patterns in contemporary domestic design. Attention is devoted to combining traditional patterns with contemporary domestic design for safeguarding and continuing Chinese classical culture. Traditional patterns, a novel rendition of Chinese classical culture and an obligatory component of the enduring cultural heritage of the Chinese nation, face the risk of oblivion and annihilation amidst the modernization process. To safeguard and perpetuate Chinese classical culture, we need to integrate traditional patterns into modern design to create designs that are not only laden with traditional cultural elements but also accommodations with contemporary aesthetics. An investigation is conducted to explore how the perfect integration of traditional patterns in domestic design can perpetuate excellent traditional pattern elements, augment modern indigenous design and synergize new artistic forms. In this study, the Integration of traditional patterns with contemporary domestic design holds great geographical significance for protecting and preserving Chinese traditional culture. Traditional patterns are an embodiment of Chinese traditional culture and an integral component of the lengthy history and culture of the Chinese nation. In the course of modernization, many traditional cultures are susceptible to the risk of being forgotten and vanishing. Consequently, for protecting and preserving Chinese traditional culture, it is imperative to incorporate traditional patterns into modern design, thereby generating designs that are imbued with both traditional cultural content and contemporary aesthetics. Moreover, the fusion of traditional motifs with contemporary vernacular design is designed to cater to modern needs. As society evolves and the economy matures, people's demand for design becomes increasingly diverse and personalized. The harmonious integration of traditional motifs and contemporary design can satisfy the need of modern individuals for ancestral culture, whilst meeting their demands for contemporary aesthetic evaluations as well. The union of traditional motifs with contemporary vernacular design can create designs that harbor both traditional cultural depth yet align with contemporary taste, thereby satisfying the needs of modern individuals. In conclusion, the amalgamation of traditional motifs and contemporary vernacular design is a crucial design trend and an essential strategy for preserving and transmitting Chinese traditional culture.
