Shadows of an Old Maid

Abstract

This thesis examines Jane Austen's portrayal of single women within Emma and Persuasion, particularly women’s marginalization in a society dominated by marriage. Austen's minor characters of single women embody the neglect and discrimination they faced, critiquing societal constraints that limit their financial independence and define their identity to their marital status. Austen deploys these characters to reveal a reality where marriage becomes the only viable option for unmarried women. In Emma the challenges confronting spinsters and widows underscore the necessity for societal recognition of their plight, a theme echoed through both the protagonist and the minor characters. Persuasion illustrates how marginalized women can reclaim agency within a marriage-centric society by recognizing and expressing their desires. The presence of widows, however, unveils imbalanced power dynamics inherent in societal norms of marriage. Through these novels, Austen critiques the limited options available to women, accentuating the need for broader societal recognition and empowerment beyond the confines of matrimony.|본 논문은 제인 오스틴(Jane Austen)의『엠마』(Emma)와 『설득』(Persuasion)에서 결혼이라는 제도가 지배하는 사회에서 미혼의, 특히 소외된 여성의 모습을 고찰한다. 마이너 캐릭터들은 미혼 여성이 직면한 무시와 차별을 구현하며, 재정적 독립을 제한하고 정체성을 결혼 여부에 국한하는 사회적 제약을 비판한다. 오스틴은 이러한 캐릭터를 배치하여 결혼이 여성에게 유일한 선택지로 주어지는 현실을 드러낸다. 『엠마』는 마이너 캐릭터들을 통해 늙은 처녀와 미망인이 직면한 곤경에 대한 사회적 인식의 부족함을 비판한다. 『설득』은 결혼 중심 사회의 소외된 여성은 자신의 욕망을 인식하고 표현함으로써 주체성을 얻을 수 있다 강조하는 반면, 소설 속 미망인의 존재는 결혼의 사회적 규범에 내재한 권력의 불균형성을 드러낸다. 오스틴은 여성의 선택권이 제한된 사회를 비판하고 결혼의 한계를 넘어서는 더 넓은 사회적 인식과 제도의 필요성을 강조한다.
