- Abstract
- Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used in energy storage systems, such as
electric vehicles and portable electronics because of their high energy density,
high power density, and stable cycling performance. A key issue in LIBs is
understanding the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) resulting from a reductive
reaction on the anode/electrolyte interface. However, LIBs show lower thermal
stability compared to other battery systems, resulting in several safety issues like
thermal runaway. Although the thermal runaway is triggered by the decomposition
of the SEI layer, the details about the mechanism of SEI decomposition are still
not clear. Herein, we performed density functional theory (DFT) calculations and
molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to elucidate the thermal decomposition
mechanism of lithium ethylene monocarbonate (LEMC) and lithium methyl
carbonate (LMC) at the atomic scale, which are the common organic compounds
of SEI. Our results will provide useful information for designing highly stable LIB
