셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용이 여자대학생의 신체이형증상에 미치는 영향에서 자기·사회 외모비교의 매개효과

Abstract

This study is aimed to examine the mediating effects of self and social appearance comparison on the relationship between selfie editing application usage and body dysmorphic symptoms. 367 female university students enrolled in universities across the country were surveyed to measure the extent of selfie editing app usage, selfie editing app addiction tendency scale, self-appearance comparison scale, social-appearance comparison scale, and body dysmorphic symptom scale through a self-report questionnaire. To test the hypotheses, demographic analysis, reliability analysis, validity analysis, correlation analysis, and mediation effect test were conducted using SPSS 29.0 and SPSS PROCESS Macro v4.2. Based on the collected data, the results of the statistical analysis of the dual-mediation model are summarized as follows. First, there were significant static correlations between the degree of selfie editing app usage and self editing app addiction tendency and self-appearance comparison, social appearance comparison, and body dysmorphic symptoms. In addition, it was verified that self-appearance comparison and social appearance comparison had a dual mediation effect on the effects of selfie editing application use and addiction tendency on body dysmorphic symptoms, respectively. The results of this study empirically examined the relationship between self-comparison, social comparison, and body dysmorphic symptoms among female university students. In particular, based on objectification theory, self-difference theory, and social comparison theory, it was found that by using selfie retouching apps, female college students experience self-appearance comparison by comparing their actual image with the retouched selfie image and continuosly check their body, and this internalization leads to appearance comparison with others who they considered superior to themselves. If this comparison persists, it can contribute to body dysmorphic symptoms, which are feelings of body dissatisfaction and desire to change. We also found that the dual mediating effects of self-appearance comparison and social-appearance comparison were significant in the effects of selfie editing app use and selfie editing app addiction on body image symptoms. We hope that many selfie editing app users will recognize the dangers of excessive app use, and that our society will become a society where people can accept themselves as they are.| 본 연구는 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용과 신체이형증상의 관계에서 자기외모비교와 사회외모비교의 매개효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 즉, 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용 정도가 신체이형증상으로 가는 경로에서 자기외모비교와 사회외모비교가 작용하는지를 확인해본 것이다. 이를 위해 국내 대학교에 재학 중인 여자대학생 367명을 대상으로 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션의 사용 정도, 셀카 보정애플리케이션 사용 중독경향성 척도, 자기외모비교척도, 사회외모비교척도, 신체이형증상척도를 자기보고식 설문을 통해 측정하였다. 가설을 검증하기 위해 SPSS 29.0을 통해 인구통계학적 분석, 신뢰도분석, 타당도분석, 상관관계분석, 일원배치 분산분석, 독립표본 t-검정, SPSS PROCESS Macro v4.2으로 매개효과 검증을 실시하였다. 수집된 자료를 바탕으로 이중매개 모형을 통계 분석한 결과의 요약은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용 정도, 중독경향성과 자기외모비교, 사회외모비교, 신체이형증상 간에는 모두 유의미한 정적 상관을 보였다. 또한 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용 정도와 중독경향성이 각각 신체이형증상에 미치는 영향에서 자기외모비교와 사회외모비교가 이중매개효과를 나타낸다는 것을 검증하였다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용 정도가 여자대학생의 자기비교와 사회비교, 신체이형증상에 미치는 영향 관계를 실증적으로 규명하였다. 이는 대상화이론과 자기차이이론, 사회비교이론을 바탕으로 설명할 수 있다. 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션을 사용함에 따라 실제 자신의 이미지와 보정된 셀카 속 이미지를 비교하는 자기외모비교를 경험하고, 보정 앱 사용으로 자신의 신체를 감시하게 되고 내면화하여 자신보다 외적으로 우월하다고 생각되는 타인과의 외모비교를 일으킨다. 그러한 외모비교가 지속되면 신체에 대한 불만족감과 변형욕구인 신체이형증상에 영향을 미친다. 따라서 본 연구를 통해 셀카 자동보정애플리케이션 사용 정도와 셀카 보정앱 중독경향성이 신체이형증상에 미치는 영향에서 자기외모비교와 사회외모비교의 이중매개효과가 유의미함을 확인할 수 있었다. 많은 셀카 보정애플리케이션 사용자들이 과도한 앱 사용의 위험성을 인지하고, 많은 사회의 구성원들이 보다 자기 자신을 있는 그대로 받아들일 수 있는 사회가 만들어지길 바라는 바이다.
