형상변환기술을 응용한 디자인 개발에 관한 연구 - Font디자인 개발을 중심으로 -

Abstract

오늘날 현대디자인에 있어서 폰트의 기능은 디자인 결과물뿐만 아니라 디자인 언어적인 막강한 힘을 지니고 있다. 폰트(Font)는 우리말로는 글자체 또는 문자로 해석되는데 흔히 '타입(Type)', '타이포그래피(Typography)', '폰트(Font)'라는 용어를 확실한 구별 없이 모두 같은 '문자'라는 의미로 사용할 때가 많다. 일반적으로 글자 하나하나를 가리킬 때는 '타입'이라 하며, 다른 글자와 구별되는 그 글자의 특별한 형태, 즉 글자꼴을 '폰트' 또는 '타입페이스(Typeface)'라고 하고, 같은 스타일의 글자라고 하더라도 다양한 크기 및 굵기, 기울기를 갖고 있는 글자들을 모두 이야기할 때는 '타입 패밀리(Type Family)'라고 한다. 이러한 모든 의미의 글자와 글자가 위치한 공간, 레이아웃된 모양 등 글자로 디자인(Designing with Type)된 상태 및 과정 모두를 폭넓게 '타이포그래피'라고 한다. 본 연구는 폰트디자인 개발에 있어서 형상변환 기술을 이용하는 새로운 방법을 제시하고자한다.

본 연구는 다음과 같은 가설을 전제로 접근하였다.

영화의 특수효과에 적용되는 이미지전환기법인 몰핑(Morphing)을 폰트에 적용하면 중간형태의 다양한 문자 군을 얻을 수 있으므로 형상 변환기술을 이용한 폰트 개발은 최소한의 시간으로 다양한 문자 군을 얻을 수 있음으로써 그 가치가 있을 것이다. 이것은 대응하는 두 글자를 정량적으로 혼합하는 과정에서 얻어지는데 대응하는 문자의 두께와 높이 기울기 형태의 변화가가 클수록 다양한 변화를 얻는다.

본 연구의 실험은 일차적으로 몰핑(Morphing)을 활용했지만 향 후 형상변환기법의 새로운 폰트개발에 관한 기초연구가 될 것이다.;The function or Font is very powerful in the modem design sphere in terms of linguistic effect as well as designed products. Font refers to letter shape or letter itself. Normally, "Type", "Typography", and "Font" all refer to "Letter." Generally, when we refer to individual letter, we use the word "Type." A specific form of a letter that differentiates itself from others is called "Font" or "Typeface." Moreover, for referring to all the letters of various size, thickness and slope, despite the fact that they all have the same type of letter style, we call them "Type Family." In general, "Typography" means the designed letter and the process of designing letters based on the space where a letter is located and the layout form. The researchers of this study want to propose a new method to use "Shape-conversion technique" for developing a font design. The researchers accessed this study based on hypothesis as follows. When we use "Morphing", an image-conversion technique used for special effect in Movie, we can get various groups of letters which are in-between shapes. Developing Fonts using a shape-conversion technique as above is very valuable, considering the fact that we can create various groups of letters at the shortest period of time. In this system, a new letter is created in the process of mixing two letters that correspond with each other quantitatively. As thickness, height and slope of a letter changes substantially, the letters shape changes variously, too. Thus, although the experiment for this study used "Morphing primarily, it will become a basic study for developing a new font based on a shape-conversion technique down the road.
