아네사키 마사하루와 종교학 : 근대일본 지식인에게 있어 종교와 국가

Abstract

일본 근대종교학의 창시자로 말해지는 아네사키 마사하루(姉崎正治, 1873-1949)는 지극히 다면적인 지식인이었다. 메이지기, 다이쇼기, 쇼와기에 걸친 청일전쟁(1894), 러일전쟁(1904), 1차세계대전(1914), 중일전쟁(1939) 및 태평양전쟁(1941)과 패전에 이르기까지 근대일본이 치룬 대외전쟁과 식민주의 및 군부파시즘을 모두 경험하면서, 메이지유신 이후의 압축적인 근대화와 근대국민국가 형성 및 천황제 이데올로기와 국가신도체제에 내포된 모순을 나름대로의 방식으로 극복하고자 인격주의와 이상주의에 바탕을 둔 인문학적 종교학자, 신비주의적 신앙인, 낭만주의적 문인, 현실참여적 강연자, 평화주의적 국제활동가, 혹은 낙관적 정치가로서 평생을 바친 아네사키는 실로 근대일본사회의 한가운데에서 내외적으로 수많은 모순과 갈등에 직면하면서 그것을 한 몸에 체현한 인물이었다. 이런 의미에서 아네사키에 대해 말한다는 것은 곧 근대일본사회가 안고 있던 문제가 무엇이었으며, 당시 지식인들이 고민한 문제가 어떤 성격의 것이었는지를 되묻는 작업이 될 것이다. 그의 생애는 종교와 문화와 정치가 복잡하게 교착하는 근대일본의 시대상황과 표리일체의 것으로, 한 사람이 아니라 복수의 다중적인 인물을 동시에 들여다보는 듯한 착각에 빠질 만큼 다면적이고 복합적인 장면들로 가득 차 있다. 본고에서는 이와 같은 아네사키에 대해 대표적으로 국제인, 내셔널리스트, 종교학자로서의 궤적을 중심으로 살펴보면서, 근대일본이 안고 있던 모순이 종교와 국가(천황관, 내셔널리즘)의 상관관계를 매개로 하여 한 지식인의 삶 속에서 어떤 방식으로 재현되고 굴절되어 나타났는지를 고찰하고 있다.;Anesaki Masaharu(姉崎正治, 1873~1949), who is called the founder of modern Japanese Religious Studies at the Tokyo Imperial University, was a very multi-dimensional leading intellectual and scholar, such as a student of Religious Studies pursuing humanities, a believer in mysticism, a devout Nichiren Buddhist, a romantic man of letters, a practical lecturer, and as well as an internationalist for peace or an optimistic politician. In addition, he had experienced all the contradictions and conflicts of the modern Japan since Meiji Restoration in close connection with colonialism, military fascism, and especially all the foreign wars such as First Sino-Japanese War(1894~1895), Russo-Japanese War(1904~1905), World WarⅠ(1914~1918), Second Sino- Japanese War(1937~1945), and Pacific War(1941~1945). In this sense, we can say that to mention on Anesaki Masaharu is to question what the crucial problems in modern Japan were and/or with which the intellectual at that time were troubled. The main purpose of this article is to examine how those inconsistencies of modern Japan were represented in him with reference to the co-relationship between religion and nation－including Emperor system and nationalism, focusing on the three facets of Anesaki Masaharu as an internationalist, a nationalist, and a student of Religious Studies.
