Abstract

하이스 바커 Gijs Bakker는 네덜란드 출신으로 현대 주얼리의 산파 중의 한명이다. 그는 아름답고 장식적인 전통적인 주얼리에 대해 비판적으로 거리를 취하면서 독자적인 주얼리를 만드는데, 이것이 그에게 국제적인 명성을 부연한다. 이 글은 그의 주얼리디자인이 지닌 새로움을 작품의 분석을 통해 드러내면서 그 새로움이 무엇에 기초해 있는지를 밝히고자 한다. 그의 주얼리는 크기, 형태, 소재 면에 있어서 기존의 것과 완전히 궤를 달리 한다. 그러나 그는 다른 주얼리 작가와는 달리 주얼리를 조각과 같은 순수 조형예술매체로 간주하지 않고 주얼리의 본질적인 면을 신체와의 연관성에서 본다. 그의 주얼리는 기존의 장신구에 대한 기대를 완전히 깨뜨리며 신체와의 연관성을 바탕으로 - “Shdow Jewelry”나 “Profile Jewelry”처럼 - 착용자의 개성을 극도로 드러내 보여주거나, 아니면 - “Bib/Slab”처럼 - 주얼리를 턱받이로 만들어서 장식적이고 아름다운 전통의 주얼리에 대한 아이러니컬한 유희를 시도한다. 그는 또한 자신의 주얼리를 통해 작가의 메시지를 전달하는데, “Holysport", "I Dont Wear Jewels, I Drive Them"처럼 주로 시대적인 경향에 코멘트를 한다.

이와 같은 그의 디자인이 지닌 새로운 면은 후속세대에 커다란 영향을 끼친다. 그결과 주얼리에 새로운 형식언어의 부여, 새로운 예술매체로서의 주얼리, 착용의 관점을 통한 다른 예술매체와의 구분, 심미적 표현을 위한 재료 선택의 폭의 확장은 이후의 주얼리다지이너에게 다지인의 자명한 속성으로 이해된다.;Gijs Bakker is from the Netherlands and one of pioneers of modern jewelry. He takes a critical stand against the aesthetic and decorative role of traditional jewelry and works on his own, which has brought him an international fame. This article aims at finding out on what the novelty of his jewelry design is based while analyzing his works. His jewelry is completely differentiated from the conventional one in the aspects like size, form and material. However, as for the real nature of jewelry, unlike other jewelry artists he does not consider it as a medium of pure art like sculpture but as a medium to human bodies. Betraying our expectation, his jewelry made with the relation to a human body shows the individuality of the wearer in the extreme like "Shadow Jewelry" or "Profile Jewelry," or like "Bib/Slab" his jewelry shows ironical plays against decorative and aesthetic conventional jewelry. He also delivers his own messages through the works and makes comments mostly on the social trends, which can be shown in the works like "Holysport," and "I Don`t Wear Jewels, I Drive Them." The new aspect shown above has a great impact on the next generation. As its consequence, several things came to be taken as apparent attributes belonging to jewelry designers such as imposing new technical terms on jewelry, distinguishing it from other art media by viewing it as a wearable one, and broadening the choice of materials to express aesthetic sense.
