Abstract
Sublimity is revealed when conditions are ready, such as massive and coercive object, regular distance, free observation, advanced mental peace, uplifting human nature, emotional freedom, and virtuous demand (demand that human want to be free psychologically). The sublimity is valuable as aesthetics of the sublime, compared with existing one. As the concept of sublimity, which has been alienated in the aesthetics, is used, it gave opportunity for poetic attitude, stressing complex and dual sense such as pleasure and unpleasure above existing beauty, and subject’s mental and internal psychology not the object’s one. And it made the concept of sensitivity and art, suffocated by rationalistic tradition, evaluated newly. The aesthetics of sublimity covers dark and negative domain such as self-destruction and expansive delusion, as well as bright and positive domain such as emotional freedom and uplifting human nature. That’s why the sublimity has strong ethical and political purposes. The fact means that the sublimity lets us find dangers of self destruction as well as possibilities above existing aesthetics. On either side this debate would be helpful in searching new aesthetic domain on modern poetry.
