사칠설에 나타난 신후담의 사유방식

Abstract

신후담은 주희가 리발과 기발을 기준으로 사단과 칠정을 구분한 것이 사칠설의 근원이자 참된 주장이라고 생각했다. 그는 사단과 칠정을 하나로 다룬 설은 모두 그릇된 것이라고 보았으며, 기본적으로 이황과 이익의 설이 주자학 전통을 잇는다고 보았다. 그는 칠정 중에도 사단처럼 공리(公理)로부터 발하는 칠정이 있다고 주장함으로써 사칠설의 쟁점을 발현된 사단과 칠정의 비교⋅분석 문제에서 성명의 바름에 근원한 정과 형기의 사사로움에서 발생한 정의 구분 문제로 전환하였다. 공칠정이 리발이라는 주장을 정당화하기 위해 신후담은 리와 기를 일반적으로 논한 것과 한정적으로 논한 것으로 구분하였고, 리발과 기발의 리와 기는 한정적으로 논한 것으로서 각각 성명의 바름과 형기의 사사로움을 가리킨다고 주장했다. 신후담은 자신의 사칠설에 근거하여 이익의 사칠설을 분석하였고, 논의가 미진한 점에 대해서는 수정하고 보완함으로써 사칠논쟁을 종결지으려 노력했다. 그 과정에서 신후담은 전통을 중시하는 사유방식을 보여 주면서도 기존과 다른 방식으로 개념을 이해하고 의미를 부여하는 유연한 사유방식을 드러낸다. 마땅한 근거가 제시되지 않는다면 개념의 세분화는 논의를 복잡하게 만들 뿐이다. 하지만 그는 인심도심설과 사칠설을 연계하여 자신의 주장을 정당화하였다. 조선시대 유학자들의 사유방식이 지금 우리에게 영향을 끼치고 있다면, 신후담의 사유방식을 형식화하는 일은 우리의 사유에 대한 성찰을 위해 중요한 연구일 것이다.;Shin Hudam thought that Zhu Xi’s distinguishing four clues[四端] from seven feelings[七情] based on Li Bal[理發] and Ki Bal[氣發] was the origin of the theory of four-seven[四七說] and he believed that it was true. He judged that arguments contradicting with the distinguishment were wrong, and basically thought that Yi Hwang’s and Yi Ik’s theories succeeded the Zhu Xi tradition.

Shin argued that there were seven feelings that are manifested from morality as they did in the case of four clues. Here, his focus shifted from a) comparing and analyzing four clues and seven feelings to b) discerning emotions that originate from morality and those that arise from private interests. In order to rationalize the claim that public seven feelings originate from morality, Shin discerned generally applying the meaning of Li and Ki from using Li and Ki to refer to the specific. Li and Ki in Li Bal and Ki Bal applies to the latter and respectively point to morality and private interests.

Shin analyzed Yi Ik’s theory based on his own, and tried to conclude the debate around four-seven by revising and supplementing the previous discussions. In the process, he showed a way of thinking that values tradition, while also flexibly approaching so that comprehends and expands concept in unprecedented ways. Furthermore, he justified his argument in his own way that relates the theory of InSimDoSim[人心道心] and the theory of four-seven.
