Abstract
Background : With growing roles of pharmacists in hospitals to ensure medication safety, professional standards for hospital pharmacy that serve as a basic guide for the provision of pharmacy service in hospitals have been published worldwide. However, it is difficult to apply these standards directly in Korea. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop standards for hospital pharmacy reflecting current situations in Korea. Methods : Standards were drafted through comprehensive analysis of hospital pharmacy standards and guidelines from FIP, Europe, United states, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan considering domestic healthcare accreditation standards, related laws, regulations, and job description of The Korean Society of Health-system Pharmacists (KSHP). Based on the draft, final statements were formulated by expert consensus through face- to-face meeting and two rounds of survey with KSHP’s 13 members who had at least 15 years of experience in hospital pharmacy. Results : Final version of Korean standards of Hospital and Health-System Pharmacy Practice consisted of the following 10 sections containing a total of 92 statements and 79 detailed statements: 1) General Operation and Pharmacy Organization, 2) Policy and Regulation of Medication Utilization, 3) Facilities and System, 4) Medication Procurement and Distribution, 5) Optimization of Pharmacotherapy, 6) Prescription and Dispensing, 7) Medication Administration and Patient education, 8) Medication Use Monitoring, 9) Education and Research and 10) Human Resources. Conclusion : Korean standards of Hospital and Health-System Pharmacy Practice were developed to serve as guideposts for hospital pharmacists. They provide a reference for goal setting and a benchmark for evaluating the quality of services and patient care. Application of these standards can vary depending on the setting of institution and the nature of practice sites.
