Abstract
This study determines the meaning of “Suburb” of the Gyeongseong-bu before the expansion of administrive district through newspaper articles covering the suburbs. To examine the spatial perception and composition of the suburbs, this study analyzed the daily newspapers of the 1920s ~ the 1930s and used the laws, statistics, investigations, and maps of that time. The newspaper articles that report suburban areas were a means of promoting the policies and intentions of colonial authorities, but simultaneously, they tried to find out the reality of suburban areas by visiting them. The term of 'Suburb' in these articles refers to the neighboring areas (outskirts) of Gyeongseong-bu. However, the traditional and modern suburban concepts are double revealed. The suburban featured in the article are not merely geographical, but more specifically classified through the consciousness of life at the time. This distinction can be divided into South of the Han River, northern, western, eastern, and southern areas depending on the four directions. Not only that, this area can be separated by the Four gates of Fortress Wall of Seoul, which distinguished the traditional suburban spaces of the Joseon Dynasty. In addition, as transportation to Gyeongseong became important, these districts of tram lines in each region became a center for the suburbs. The zoning systems and regional development plans announced by the Joseon Planning Ordinance in 1934 were also affected. Furthermore, The suburb has various meanings. First, Suburban area recognized as a good place to live because it has an idyllic landscape that contrasts with the city. Second, it was recognized as an area that needed to be developed along with the city plan of the Gyeongseong Ministry. Third, the suburbs exist as spaces that share various functions such as housing problems, poverty, industrial problems, and the disposal of other wastes with Gyeongseong ministry. Therefore, suburban areas had many difficulties in developing.
