Abstract
We often find the modern design elements from the past design work. So, it is very important to investigate a past design history, also dyeing art is same as another design. The dyeing art have included each nation`s cultural background, so, the dyeing art have particular mutual relationship with culture. In this study, in order to considerate the dyeing art history, the origin, spread and the cultural background were studied. But, because the type of dyeing fabrics was very various, this research studied about Plangi, Ikat, Batik and printing, classifying a dyeing art into four groups. Till now, a dyeing art have seen displayed sometimes with printed fabrics, sometimes with Ikat, sometimes with jacquard and so on, and gradually have been developed in the technical side. The significant cultural backgrounds that had big effect in development and change of dyeing art wre aggression of other culture, movement of dyers, trade, clothing life and so on. And the social backgrounds were the silk road, the art of navigation, the industrial revolution, discovery of synthetic dyestuff, development of dyeing machine and so on. The symbolic meaning of dyeing art pattern were religious and philosophical coloring, and a talisman against evil same as illness, death and ill luck. The modern significance of the past dyeing art is that is playing an important role which give a insperation in a new dyeing design, in future, it is suggested that this will be applicate and inherit more and more.
