대화체 담화에 나타난 제주 방언 강세구 성조 실현 양상

Abstract

이 논문은 실험음성학적 연구 방법에 의하여 제주 방언에서 나타나는 강세구의 성조 실현 양상을 살펴보고, 서울말과의 비교를 통해 제주 방언의 강세구 성조 유형과 특성을 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 20대에서 60대에 이르는 다양한 연령대의 화자 40명에게서 대화체 담화를 수집ㆍ분석함으로써 낭독실험 위주의 기존 연구 방법을 보완하고, 현재 제주어가 지니는 방언적 특성과 연령대별 변이를 밝히고자 하였다. 본 연구의 피조사자는 출생지와 주 성장지 및 거주지가 모두 제주도인 화자들로 구성하였다. 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 제주 방언은 서울말 강세구 성조와 마찬가지로 첫 음절의 두음 종류에 따라 성조 패턴이 달라졌다. 즉 첫 음절이 경음, 격음, 마찰음으로 시작하는 경우는 H(고조)로 시작하고 그 외의 경우에는 L(저조)로 시작하였다. 둘째, 제주어의 구체적인 강세구 성조 패턴은 서울말의 전형적인 성조 패턴과 다르게 나타났다. 가장 두드러지는 차이점은 서울말의 경우 마지막 음절이 H(고조)로 끝나는 데 비해 제주어는 마지막 음절이 L(저조)로 실현되는 경우가 많았다는 점이다. 마지막으로, 2음절 강세구의 HL 유형과 4음절 강세구의 LHHL 유형은 젊은 연령대 화자 집단에서 상대적으로 더 많이 사용되고 있었으며, 이러한 연령대별 차이는 제주 방언의 강세구 성조에 세대별 변화가 진행되고 있음을 말해준다. The current study aims to describe the prosodic characteristics of accentual phrase (AP) in the Jeju dialect. We analyzed the AP patterns and lengths in spontaneous speech samples of 40 adult participants who are in their 20s to 60s. All of them were born and raised and now live on Jeju Island. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, most speakers selected the H tone as the initial tone in an AP beginning with a strong consonant (i.e., a tense, aspirated, or fricative consonant). Otherwise, the L tone was selected as the AP-initial tone. Second, unlike the Seoul dialect, the L tone was the most common AP-final tone of an IP-medial AP in Jeju Dialect. Third, significant differences were observed in the realization of each AP pattern across age groups. We found that the younger age groups were much more likely to show the HL pattern and the LHHL pattern, implying that the tone patterns are currently undergoing change in progress.
