디지털 신디사이저의 등장과 그 이후의 음악 분석 연구 : "YAMAHA DX7"의 Electric Piano Sound를 중심으로

Abstract

The study started from the question why the electric piano sound of Yamaha DX7 released in 1983 has become one of the best sounds of the times. Many musicians used Yamaha DX7 and even though there were enough data referred to as the best digital instrument, but there were no analytical and systematic studies about the reason. To support this curiosity, the study contains data analyzing the background of the time when Yamaha DX7 firstly release, its manufacturing method, the principle how to make sound, and the music using the electric piano sound. The study was conducted recording in the same environment to test the differences between other electric pianos which are similar family to the electric piano sound of Yamaha DX7 and was expressed as a waveform and an overtone spectrum which can be visually compared using as analysis program. As a result, Yamaha DX7 was an instrument that could compensate for shortcomings of analog instruments since the digital music technology has developed, and Yamaha DX7’s own electric piano sound has a new sound synthesis method that is different from before and is well combined and widely used with pop music at the time. Before 1980s, the electric guitar was mainly used in lots of songs, but since Yamaha DX7 released, the role of the keyboard in pop music has been more expanded. Since then, so many musicians still remember the electric piano sound of Yamaha DX7 and they variously use it in pop and other genres. Since the appearance of digital synthesizers, MIDI was appeared and its technologies have developed, now is the time to easily meet analog instruments or discontinued instruments as virtual instruments. Beside Yamaha DX7, there are many other virtual instruments and synthesizers, and it means even though time goes by, musicians get ideas by old instruments and create new music in them. This study investigates evidence on how Yamaha DX7 becomes the best sound of the time, but as a musician, it also contains the meaning of having interest of the background of the times and the technologies that are currently developing, the new technologies to create music based on them|국문요지

본 논문은 1983년도에 출시된 YAMAHA DX7의 Electric Piano Sound가 어떠한 이유로 시대를 대표하는 사운드가 되었는가에 대한 호기심에서 시작되었다. 많은 음악가들이 YAMAHA DX7을 사용했고 오늘날까지 명기라고 언급된 자료는 많았지만 그것이 어떠한 이유 때문이었는지 분석적이고 체계적으로 밝혀진 자료가 없었다. 이러한 궁금증을 뒷받침하기 위해 YAMAHA DX7이 등장한 그 시대의 배경과 악기의 제조방식, 소리를 만드는 원리, Electric Piano Sound가 사용된 음악에 대해 분석한 데이터를 담았다.

YAMAHA DX7의 Electric Piano Sound와 비슷한 계열의 다른 Electric Piano는 어떤 차이가 있는지 살펴보기 위해 같은 환경에서 녹음을 진행하였고, 분석 프로그램을 이용해 시각적으로 비교할 수 있는 파형과 배음 스펙트럼으로 나타내었다. 결과적으로 YAMAHA DX7은 디지털 기술이 발전하면서 아날로그 악기의 단점을 보완할 수 있는 악기였고, 이전과 다른 새로운 소리의 합성 방식을 가지며 당시 흥행하고 있던 팝 음악과 접목되어 많이 사용되면서 YAMAHA DX7만의 Electric Piano Sound를 만들어낸 것이다.

1980년대 이전 음악에서는 일렉트릭 기타가 주가 되는 곡들이 많았다면 YAMAHA DX7 등장 이후부터는 건반악기의 역할이 확장된 음악이 많아졌다. 오늘날에도 FM 피아노라고 불릴 정도로 많은 음악가들이 아직까지 YAMAHA DX7의 Electric Piano Sound를 기억하며 팝, 가요 등 대중음악에 많이 이용하고 있다. 디지털 신디사이저 등장 이후 미디가 출현하고 현재 기술이 더욱 발전되면서 아날로그 악기 또는 YAMAHA DX7과 같은 단종된 악기들을 가상악기로 쉽게 만나 볼 수 있는 시대가 되었다. 이것이 의미하는 바는 시간이 흘러도 음악가들은 옛날 악기들을 통해 아이디어를 얻으며 그 안에서 새로운 음악을 만든다는 것을 의미한다.

이 연구는 YAMAHA DX7이 어떻게 그 시대를 대표하는 사운드가 됐는지에 대한 근거 자료를 조사하는 것이기도 하지만, 음악가로서 그 안에 시대적 배경, 현재 발전하는 기술 또는 새로운 기술에 관심을 가지고 그런 것들을 바탕으로 음악을 만들어 나가길 바라는 의미를 담고 있다.
