Moderating Design Idea for Design Collaboration

Abstract

To design a creative space, it is important to retrieve existing space layouts and floor plans. The characteristics of design make it difficult to query design in an explicit language. Previous approaches to this task use visual queries based on design reference retrieval systems to support implicit language queries. However, researchers have disregarded the reference retrieval history during the design collaboration. We propose an idea moderation system that moderates the retrieval history. Users can efficiently summarize and manage ideas from retrieval cycles in discussions in a well-structured manner. We moderate the design features in the group's retrieval history based on prototypicality and generate design alternatives by summarizing the ideas. Experiments were conducted on four groups of designers tasked with designing residential space layouts. The experimental results suggest that discussions with the idea moderation system were more creative and efficient. In addition, the proposed system helped organize the opinions of the members of the design groups. It succeeded in objectively directing them toward the next step without criticizing opinions in the design collaboration. With the Idea Moderation System, we envision the elimination of unnecessary debates in the design discussion thanks to a multivariate summarization of ideas and the construction of design cycles|창의적인 공간을 디자인하기 위해서, 기존에 존재하는 공간 레이아웃과 도 면을 검색하는 것은 중요하다. 디자인의 특성은 분명한 (explicit) 언어로 디 자인을 검색하는 것을 까다롭게 만든다. 앞선 문헌들은 암시적인 쿼리 (implicit language query)를 지원하기 위해 디자인 레퍼런스 검색 (reference retrieval) 시스템을 바탕으로 시각적인 쿼리를 지원했다. 하지만, 연구자들은 디자인 협업 중 레퍼런스 검색 기록에는 관심을 두지 않았다. 이 연구는 검색 기록을 중재 (moderate)하는 아이디어 중재 시스템 (the Idea Moderation System)을 제안한다. 시스템 사용자들은 디자인 토론 내의 검색 사이클에서 나오는 아이디어를 효과적으로, 그리고 구조화되어 있도록 관리하고 요약할 수 있다. 시스템은 대표성 (prototypicality)을 기반으로 협업 그룹의 검색 기 록 내에서 나타나는 디자인 특징을 중재하고, 아이디어를 요약하여 디자인 대 안을 생성한다. 네 개의 디자이너 그룹은 주거 공간 레이아웃을 디자인하는 실험을 수행했다. 실험 결과, 아이디어 중재 시스템을 사용한 그룹의 토론에 서 더 높은 창의성과 시간 효율성이 나타났다. 또한, 제안된 시스템은 디자이 너 그룹 일원들의 의견 정리를 지원했다. 시스템은 디자인 협업 상황에서 불 만족스러운 의견 없이 객관적인 디자인의 진행을 성공적으로 수행했다. 본 연 구자는 아이디어 중재 시스템을 통한 아이디어의 다변량 요약 (multivariate summarization)과 디자인 사이클의 구조화를 기반으로 디자인 토론에서의 불 필요한 논쟁의 제거를 그리고 있다.
