- Abstract
- The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of soil nailing method
that replaces rebars with the high-strength hollow rebar. Because the diameters of
two types of rebars are identical, the material used for the hollow rebar is
significantly lower. The tensile strength of hollow rebars is in line with that of
rebars, whereas the tensile stiffness lower due to smaller area. In this study,
laboratory and field tests were conducted to examine the stability and applicability
of the high-strength hollow rebar soil nailing method. Furthermore, numerical and
stability analyses were conducted to verify the applicability of the soil nailing
reinforcements fitted with the high-strength hollow rebars.
In the laboratory tests, rebars and high-strength hollow rebars with rolling
treatment on the surface were grouted under the same conditions. A pull-out test
then examined the reinforcement-grout adhesion performance. The laboratory tests
show that the without rolling treatment hollow rebars result in significantly lower
adhesion performance. The adhesion capacity is increased to a level similar to
rebars by surface rolling treatment of the hollow rebar. The ratio of the area of
the rolling treatment to the total surface area is demonstrated to saturate at 10%.
Therefore, a ratio of 10% is recommended for application to practice.
For the field test, rebars and high-strength hollow rebars of 6 m and 12 m were
installed on a 5 m high slope. The behavioral characteristics of the reinforcements
were analyzed through tensile tests, pull-out tests, and field measurements to
verify the field applicability. The load-displacement relationship obtained through
the tensile and pull- out tests showed similar behavior between the two types of
reinforcement. Therefore, there would be no problem in the applicability and
stability of high-strength hollow rebars with rolling treatment as reinforcements
for the soil nailing method.
The adequacy of the laboratory and field test results for the high-strength
hollow rebar soil nailing method was also verified via numerical analysis. The test
and numerical analysis results were also comparatively analyzed. The behavioral
characteristics and shear stress of the rebar and high-strength hollow rebar were
similar within each case group under the same conditions. In addition, the same
displacement and shear stress behavior are exhibited regardless of the presence or
absence of the grouting of the hollow section of the high-strength hollow rebar.
This proves the application stability of high-strength hollow rebars as
reinforcements and the ease of construction for the soil nailing method.
Furthermore, a slope stability program compared and evaluated the stability
changes under various conditions for the rebar and high-strength hollow rebar soil
nailing planned on a slope and reviews the applicability. The analysis results show
that the rebar and high-strength hollow rebar with rolling treatment produce
similar reinforcement effects. Therefore, no difficulties will be observed when
applying the same analysis method and conditions as those of rebars when using
a limit equilibrium analysis based program. When designing using high-strength
hollow rebars with rolling treatment, the tensile strength is numerically clear.
However, the reduction ratio of the adhesion of grout and high-strength hollow
rebar has not been defined yet and requires test value data. Therefore, by
establishing standards, more accurate designs will be possible in the future.
A comprehensive analysis of the reliability and applicability of the high-strength
hollow rebar soil nailing method based on the above research shows that the
reinforcement stability is higher when high-strength hollow rebars with a length
of 6 m or longer are applied on relatively stiff ground. Furthermore, it is
demonstrated that the ease of construction of high-strength hollow rebar is
superior compared to rebars because of improvements to the grouting method
using the hollow sector of the pipe and 50% reduction in weight per unit length.
Based on the extensive evaluations, it is therefore demonstrated that the
conventional rebars can be replaced with high-strength hollow rebars as
