덕천서원의 풍수와 남명사상의 해석

Abstract

본 연구는 덕천서원의 입지와 관련하여 풍수와 학문세계가 건축물의 공간구성 속에 어떤 형태로 녹아들었는지 밝혀보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 풍수를 반영해서 입지를 선정했다고 밝히고 있지는 않지만, 주산과 명당수를 밝히고 있다는 점은 의미있는 입지선정이 이루어졌다는 반증이다. 남명이 이곳 지리산 자락 덕산에 자리하게 된 배경에는, 이곳이야말로 자신의 학문을 완성할 수 있는 최적의 장소라 여겼기 때문이다. 아기자기한 분위기가 아니라 강인한 느낌으로 무장한 듯한 분위기를 연출하고 있고, 장대한 지리산의 기상이 이를 뒷받침하고 있으며, 지리산 천왕봉이 한눈에 바라다보이는 곳에 있어 그 기상이 최고라 할 수 있기 때문이다. 지리산의 기상이 곧 호연지기를 담는 그릇이라 인식한 것인데, 하징은 서원입지로서는 최고라 할 만하다고 표현하고 있다. 지리산을 태조산으로 하고 사당을혈처에 배치하고 있으며, 호순신의 지리신법에 부합하는 좌향을 선택하고 있다. 맹호출림형은 남명의 호연지기를 드러내는 물형이다. 따라서 덕천서원은 풍수에 바탕을 두고 입지를 선정하였으며, 남명의 학문적 기상은 건축물의 당호속에 녹아들어 있다. 호연지기를 실천하고자 한 남명의 이상향은 지리산 자락의 덕천이었던 셈이다.

The purpose of this study is to find out what the characteristic features of feng shui and the academic world of Deokcheon Seowon have in terms of the location of Deokcheon Seowon. Although Dukcheon Seowon does not say that it has chosen a location based on feng shui, it is a sign that it has made a meaningful selection of Jusan and Myeongdangsu. In the background of Nam-myeong’s entrance to the Jiri Mountain, he thought it was the best place to complete his studies. This is because it is not a cute atmosphere but armed with a strong feeling, and the grand spirit of Mt. Jiri supports it, and the scenery of Mt. Jiri is the best place to see at a glance. The weather of Jirisan Mountain is recognized as a well-being vessel, and Hajing(河澄) says it is the best place for Seowon. Therefore, Deokcheon Seowon has chosen a location based on feng shui, and Nam’s academic spirit has been dissolved in the Dangho(堂號) Lake of the building. The idealistic spirit of the man who tried to realize the prosperity of the mountain was the virtue of the Jiri Mountain.
